At his death, George Spencer (1758-1834) had created the greatest private library in Europe. At the time, many aristocrats were spending huge sums acquiring rare printed books. With monastic and aristocratic libraries in Europe being dissolved, collectors had access to thousands of examples. The Second Earl Spencer's interests were in English 'black-letter' printing, especially the works of Caxton, and continental incunables, particularly first editions of Greek and Latin classics. Thomas Dibdin (1776-1847) was employed as Spencer's librarian and visited Europe searching for new acquisitions. Published in 1814-15, this catalogue is of the earliest and rarest items in the collection. Each is described in detail, with reproductions of woodcuts and engravings, making this a fascinating record of one man's commitment to collecting the earliest examples of this revolutionary invention. Volume 2 covers the many first editions of Greek and Latin classics, predominantly from Italy, including examples by Valdarfer.

In this essay from 1614, the Neo-Latin poet, translator, and commentator John Barclay describes the manners and mores of his European contemporaries. He derives the sources of an individual's peculiarities of behavior and temperament from the "genius"―the individual character created by each person's upbringing, time of life, and profession. Barclay likewise describes each nation's genius, its national character, and provides some of the geographical and historical background from which he claims this genius arose. The essay is a valuable study, not only for the illustration it offers of a pre-Romantic view of Europe, but for a glimpse into the continuities that mark European civilization.The introduction describes the Classical and Renaissance background to Barclay's work, with a detailed biography of the author. The Latin text reproduces Barclay's first edition, with the necessary corrections. The English translation (1631) is that of Thomas May, a skillful translator of Vergil, Lucan, and other classical authors, as well as a playwright in the manner of Ben Jonson. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was a student of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and bequeathed his personal library of 3000 volumes to the College on condition that the contents remained intact and unaltered; they remain there, in his original bookcases, to this day. In the early twentieth century, a project to produce a complete catalogue was begun, and four volumes were published between 1914 and 1940. Volume 4 describes the books about shorthand which Pepys - an enthusiastic practitioner himself - methodically collected, and had bound in five volumes. Over the centuries, various specialists had consulted this important collection but this catalogue brought it to the attention of bibliographers for the first time. It provides background information about the author of each work, places the content in its historical context and supplies bibliographic details together with notes about other surviving copies. It is a valuable resource for historians of stenography and its uses.

Photius was a ninth-century patriarch of Constantinople who compiled summaries of 280 books he had read, known at the Bibliotheca. It deals with Attic, Hellenistic, Roman imperial and Byzantine sources, about half of which are now lost. Here Nigel Wilson presents an annotated edition in translation of a wide selection from these book reviews, with the aim of revealing the breadth of Photius' interests.
