This book examines some of the most spectacular ancient monuments in Britain - the iron age brochs of north and west Scotland. It sets the building of these unique fortifications into context and examines some of the impressive sites that may still be visited, including the brochs of Mousa and Clickhimin in Shetland and Carolway on Lewis. There is a short section on what brochs are not - including 'Pictish' towers. A select gazetteer of some of the most important brochs is followed by a list of museums in which representative artefacts are preserved. There is a short bibliography.

Concentrating on the Later Iron Age excavators summarise their latest research from specific important sites in the region and link the available material evidence with the later historically documented kingdoms and power structures of the Picts and Vikings. They discuss questions of regional diversity and development, aspects of the material culture, and re-evaluate the period as a whole. Traditional structural typological and diffusionist methods are abandoned in favour of new models of development and change. Ian Armit is a freelance archaeologist attached to the Department of Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh, and Chairman of the Scottish Archaeological Forum.

Ms. Schlant's admiration and care for Broch's books comes through her detailed exploration of Broch and his writing in a very readable and enjoyable way. I've owned this book for years and, as I also enjoy Broch, I refer to it often. She does not dissect his writing, but serves as more of an intermediary to a better understanding of what Broch was trying to accomplish and brings us, perhaps, a bit closer to Broch's thought process (his essays will serve you well there). The biographical is well integrated within the discussions of his writings, and his life was enough of a story itself to bring further interest to this book. In closing, if I might, I'll leave you with the first two sentences of Michael P. Steinberg's forward: "Hermann Broch was a man of many genres. By any measure, Hermann Broch was one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Author of The Sleepwalkers and The Spell, he stands, together with James Joyce and Marcel Proust, at the pinnacle of literary Modernism. Born in 1886, he saw the First World War destroy the culture and consciousness of what had come before, seeing the West thrust unwillingly into the modern age. By 1938 Broch found himself arrested and detained, during which time be began work on his greatest novel, The Death of Virgil. Dozens of friends from all over the world managed to help him find his release and he moved to the United States where he lived for the rest of his life.With his wife Franziska, Broch had only a single child, Armand. While Broch had become preoccupied with deep questions of philosophy, psychology, and politics, his son became a thoroughgoing materialist. Sent away to an elite boarding school when 14, Armand found himself surrounded by students from the richest families in Europe. He became devoted to sports, to fast luxury cars (his father did not even know how to drive), and to the first class lifestyle of his classmates. These letters show the profound breach that developed between father and son. They also provide a portrait of the Gilded Age, a time of remarkable change, as Europe headed on a course of horrible inevitability. Letters from Broch during this time are uncommon, so we also get a chance to follow the trajectory of his life as he prepares to leave his job as an industrialist and devote himself to study and to writing.
