Auch die etwa 40.000 Häftlinge, die Ende 1944 in 86 Außenlagern des KZ Neuengamme inhaftiert waren, wurden zu Arbeitseinsätzen herangezogen. Marc Buggeln unterzieht die Bedingungen in den verschiedenen Lagern einem systematischen Vergleich. Dabei nutzt er Pierre Bourdieus praxeologischen Ansatz sowie dessen Habitus-Konzept. So werden die Gewalt- und Handlungsoptionen der Täter in ihrer Vielschichtigkeit analysiert und die Überlebensstrategien der Opfer sowohl strukturell wie auch biographisch beschrieben. Mit diesem theoretisierenden und vergleichenden Zugriff liefert Buggeln einen neuen Forschungsansatz. Diese Studie befindet sich nicht nur auf der Höhe der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion, sie wird selbst die künftige Forschung nachhaltig prägen.
