This urge is hardly a contemporary phenomenon and the beginnings of such activity surely date back beyond the beginnings of written language. In 1960 James Knipmeyer took the first of many vacations to the Colorado Plateau region of southern Utah and northern Arizona. During his years of hiking and camping he grew fascinated with the names and dates carved on canyon walls and painted onto rock boulders. In 1976 he set himself the "modest" goal of locating and photographing all of the old, historic inscriptions to be found in the area dated prior to 1900—thinking there might be some two or three hundred which he could collect in four or five years. More than twenty-five years and almost 1,600 inscription images later, his work has resulted in Butch Cassidy Was Here. Despite its evident significance in lesbian communities, the designations of butch and femme have rarely been theorized or written about from a critical perspective. For many lesbians, butch and femme are expressive lived identities, yet prevalent intellectual trends encourage us in the view that these are somehow provisional, empty, and artificial. This book is an attempt to think creatively about hutch/femme in a way which honors the intimacy of these identities, hoping to articulate the closeness we hold to these evocative categories, respecting the power they hold in lesbian cultures, but also avoiding the cliched romanticization often endemic to their representation. Far from being sentimentally unreflective, the pieces in this collection also intend to offer up the mirror of estrangement, so we can think about these categories in new ways, combining the critical eye with affect. BUTCH is a 198 page color 9" x 12" monograph of photographer Meg Allen's portrait series "BUTCH". BUTCH is an environmental Portrait series documenting the aesthetics of the butch identity in the queer mecca of San Francisco and surrounding area from 2012-2017. The portraits were shot during a time when queers were disappearing from the city and there were cries from the lesbian community that the butch identity was also disappearing. Each individual was asked to choose their wardrobe and to pick a location they connected to. Most chose their homes. The series explores what butch means in the modern era and features women and gender queer individuals who don't conform to the strict codes of gender identity. For queers, the series celebrates the butch identity that never recieves the spotlight. And for heterosexuals, the series allows them to journey through the possibilities of identifying outside the gender binary. The series is 123 photographs in total.
