Gonville and Caius College
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 89.15 $Gonville & Caius College is exceptional among Oxford and Cambridge colleges in having had three separate founders at different times: Edmund Gonville, William Bateman and John Caius. The statutes made by those founders are also exceptional, for they have two unique features: first, the statutes of the last founder did not supersede those of the second founder but took effect concurrently with them for over three hundred years; and, second, the longest set of the three founders' statutes was formulated by someone - John Caius - who was not only a founder but had himself been a fellow of the college for which he was drawing up his statutes and was Master of that college during the years in which he was formulating the final draft of those statutes. As a result, Caius' statutes are remarkable for the unique detail of their provisions and their exceptional character. For both these reasons John Caius' statutes deserve greater attention than they have been given. In addition to an edition and translation of the three founders' statutes, the book also contains an account of the circumstances in which they were formulated and the very different characters of the founders who made them. There then follows an examination of five topics on which the statutes of the last founder either led to bitter disputes and litigation during the later three centuries or else were simply ignored or tacitly evaded by common consent, particularly the hitherto neglected subjects of stipends and dividends.

Ante-nicene Fathers: the Writings of the Fathers Down to A.d. 325 : Fathers of the Third Century - Hippolytus; Cyprian; Caius; Novatian; Appendix
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.35 $"One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume V of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, readers will find the writings of: ¿ Hippolytus, who during his time was considered an antipope because of his conflicts with the Church ¿ Cyprian, a bishop of Carthage, who greatly supported the establishment of the Church ¿ Caius, who supposedly wrote the Muratorian Canon, the oldest list of the books in the New Testament ¿ Novatian, an antipope who founded a sect of Christianity that endured a few hundred years after his death."

Operational Research and the Social Sciences (hb 1989)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 155.03 $Twenty five years ago, in 1964, The Operational Research Society's first International Conference (held at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge) took as its theme "Operational Research and the Social Sciences". The Conference sessions were organised around topics such as: Organisations and Control; Social Effects of Policies; Conflict Resolution; The Systems Concept; Models, Decisions and Operational Research. An examination of the published proceedings (J.R.Lawrence ed., 1966, Operational Research and the Social Sciences, Tavistock, London) reveals a distinct contrast between the types of contribution made by the representatives of the two academic communities involved. Nevertheless, the Conference served to break down some barriers, largely of ignorance about the objects, methods and findings of each concern. In the ensuing twenty five years, although debate has continued about the relationship between OR and the social sciences, mutual understanding has proved more difficult to achieve than many must have hoped for in 1964.

The Tragedy of the Caesars, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.77 $Excerpt from The Tragedy of the Caesars, Vol. 2 of 2: A Study of the Characters of the Caesars of the Julian and Claudian HousesPhilo the Jew tells us that he heard in Rome, on trustworthy authority, that Tiberius, had he lived longer, would have got rid of Caius, so as to secure the throne to Tiberius Gemellus, as he had reason to suspect the sinister mind of Caligula, 'who was full of evil will towards the whole Claudian family and considered only his mother's, the Julian, stock.' He says that Macro persuaded the old emperor that the character of Caius was not so malicious as he sup posed, and that more than once Macro acted as the protector of the young prince. ~the Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus, was born in the year that Tiberius died, and he has preserved to us-an interesting incident relative to the friendship of Agrippa and Caius.Herod stood high in favour with Antonia, and she often helped him in his pecuniary embarrassments. He lived in Rome, but was frequently at Tusculum, where he contracted a not disinterested friendship with Caligula, whom he believed to be destined for the empire.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
