Capek Four Plays : R.U.R./the Insect Play/the Makropulos Case/the White Plague
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.88 $"There was no writer like him. . . prophetic assurance mixed with surrealistic humour and hard-edged social satire: a unique combination" (Arthur Miller)This volume brings together fresh new translations of four of his most popular plays, more than ever relevant today. In R. U. R., the Robot - an idea Çapek was the first to invent - gradually takes over all aspects of human existence except procreation; The Insect Play is a satirical fable in which beetles, butterflies and ants give dramatic form to different philosophies of life; The Makropulos Case is a fantasy about human mortality, finally celebrating the average lifespan; The White Plague is a savage and anguished satire against fascist dictatorship and the virus of inhumanity.

Karel Capek: In Pursuit of Truth, Tolerance and Trust
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.53 $KAREL CAPEK is the most important, most versatile, but also the most neglected Czech writer of the 20th century. His plays R.U.R. and From the Life of Insects created a sensation in London in the 1920's: his word robot was introduced into the Oxford English Dictionary while his other plays as well as novels, short stories, essays, travelogues and causeries followed in English translations in qiuick succession until cultural links were broken off by the war. Because of his liberal, anti-war views Capek's works were blacklisted by the Nazis occupying his homeland, as well as later by the communists. Presenting a study of all genres Capek used, Bradbrook's book pays the debt history owes to Capek. It is also the first original book on Capek published in the UK. Both as a writer an as a journalist, Capek sought the truth: in the epistemological sense, how we acquire knowledge; in the moral one, how we apply it to our behaviour. Recongizing great differences between individuals, Capek recommends torerance and mutual trust as the best way towards the improvement of democratic human relations. His philosophical trilogy - HODUBAL, METEOR and AN ORDINARY LIFE - is the best artistic expression of these ideas; as a journalist, he conveyed them explicitly. Capek's science fiction works show his admiration for the achievements of science and technology; he forecast the use of nuclear power, but also strongly warned against its abuse. His English readers particularly appreciated his common sense, wit and humor. Karel Capek was a man who taught through laughter.

Karel Capek: Life and Work [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.38 $Contemporary Czech novelist and playwright Ivan Klíma has transformed his lifelong admiration for the work of the great Czech novelist and playwright Karel Capek into an extended personal essay on Capek's life and work. Written with letters and other material not available to earlier biographers and critics, Klíma reflects on the effects of the author’s personal relationships and scrutinizes his artistic and philosophical influences. This is not merely a biography or a critical work covering all of Capek's writings; it is a wide-ranging study of the life and work of a great artist as examined from the perspective of another eminent writer who grew up in Capek's shadow.

The Book Design of Josef Capek: Seeing The Book: The Modern Czech Book 3 (Moderni ceska kniha / The Modern Czech Book, 3)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $Josef Capek (1887-1945) was one of Czech modernism's most formative protagonists. The artist first studied weaving before finding his métier as both a painter and designer. During a short stint in Paris, he befriended the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who was then the leading theorist of and driving force behind Cubism. Capek adopted the Cubist style, fusing it with moodier elements of Expressionism and Symbolism to create a uniquely Czech take on the style. Alongside his work as a painter, Capek designed several hundred book covers from 1918 until his death in 1945 for Czech publications of early twentieth-century authors such as Apollinaire, Karel Capek, Jan Bartos, Josef Hora, Josef Kopta, Pierre Mac Orlan, Giovanni Papini, Pirandello, Miroslav Rutte and Georg Trakl and nineteenth-century authors such as Flaubert, Goethe, Kropotkin, Sheridan Le Fanu and Arthur Machen. Capek's designs were much celebrated in Czechoslavakia for their simplicity and their virtuoso use of linocut. Itself a beautiful publication, The Book Design of Josef Capek: Seeing The Book presents a fully-illustrated and complete survey of this rarely seen work.

War With the Newts (English and Czech Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 100.00 $‘War with the Newts’ (1936) is Karel Capek's darkly humorous allegory of early twentieth-century Czech politics. Captain van Toch discovers a colony of newts in Sumatra which can not only be taught to trade and use tools, but also to speak. As the rest of the world learns of the creatures and their wonderful capabilities, it is clear that this new species is ripe for exploitation - they can be traded in their thousands, will do the work no human wants to do, and can fight - but the humans have given no thought to the terrible consequences of their actions.
