Aquele não seria um pleito como tantos outros, com a tradicional divisão dos votos entre os partidos "da direita", "do centro" e "da esquerda"; o que se verifica é uma opção radical pelo voto em branco. Usando o símbolo máximo da democracia - o voto -, os eleitores parecem questionar profundamente o sistema de sucessão governamental em seu país. É desse "corte de energia cívica" que fala Ensaio sobre a lucidez (2004). Não apenas no título José Saramago remete ao seu Ensaio sobre a cegueira (1995): também na trama ele retoma personagens e situações, revisitando algumas das questões éticas e políticas abordadas naquele romance. Ao narrar as providências de governo, polícia e imprensa para entender as razões da "epidemia branca" - ações estas que levam rapidamente a um devaneio autoritário -, o autor faz uma alegoria da fragilidade dos rituais democráticos, do sistema político e das instituições que nos governam. O que se propõe não é a substituição da democracia por um sistema alternativo, mas o seu permanente questionamento. É pela via da ficção que José Saramago entrevê uma saída para esse impasse - pois é a potência simbólica da literatura (território em que reflexão, humor, arte e política se entrosam) que se revela capaz de vencer a mediocridade, a ignorância e o medo.
