Charcot in Morocco
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.93 $Charcot in Morocco is the first-ever publication of Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot’s travel diary of his 1887 trip to Morocco. Considered the father of neuropathology, Charcot (1825–1893) is a seminal character in the history of neurology and psychology. His Moroccan travel diary includes his “objective” observations of the local Jewish community, which only fortified his assumptions about the relationship between race and neuropathology. These became a conspicuous feature of his ideas about the hereditary origins of nervous ailments. His ideas – taught as doctrine to a vast audience, including a young Sigmund Freud – reveal the convergence of clinical observation and European anti-Semitism at the end of the nineteenth century. Including an enlightening critical introduction by renowned Charcot expert Toby Gelfand, Charcot in Morocco provides new insights into the personality of this influential figure and his perspectives on the “Orient” and its inhabitants.

Charcot: Constructing Neurology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 103.43 $In the second half of the 19th century, Paris became an international center for neurological studies largely because of Jean-Martin Charcot and his Salpetriere School. Charcot was named Professor of Diseases of the Nervous System at the University of Paris in 1882, and thus helped institutionalize neurology as a medical specialty. By then he had already published widely and had assembled a team of research specialists and students who approached the study of the nervous system through the celebrated methode anatomo-clinique that correlated specific neurological signs with discrete lesions in the central nervous system. Pushing beyond the bounds of anatomical study, Charcot went on to study hysteria, attracting both scientific and social notoriety. This book provides the best account of the life and contributions of Jean-Martin Charcot. It gives a fascinating picture of the man and his milieu, and clearly defines his role in establishing the new medical specialty of clinical neurology.

Invention of Hysteria: Charcot and the Photographic Iconography of the Salpetriere
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 108.31 $In this classic of French cultural studies, Georges Didi-Huberman traces the intimate and reciprocal relationship between the disciplines of psychiatry and photography in the late nineteenth century. Focusing on the immense photographic output of the Salpetriere hospital, the notorious Parisian asylum for insane and incurable women, Didi-Huberman shows the crucial role played by photography in the invention of the category of hysteria. Under the direction of the medical teacher and clinician Jean-Martin Charcot, the inmates of Salpetriere identified as hysterics were methodically photographed, providing skeptical colleagues with visual proof of hysteria's specific form. These images, many of which appear in this book, provided the materials for the multivolume album Iconographie photographique de la Salpetriere. As Didi-Huberman shows, these photographs were far from simply objective documentation. The subjects were required to portray their hysterical "type" -- they performed their own hysteria. Bribed by the special status they enjoyed in the purgatory of experimentation and threatened with transfer back to the inferno of the incurables, the women patiently posed for the photographs and submitted to presentations of hysterical attacks before the crowds that gathered for Charcot's "Tuesday Lectures."Charcot did not stop at voyeuristic observation. Through techniques such as hypnosis, electroshock therapy, and genital manipulation, he instigated the hysterical symptoms in his patients, eventually giving rise to hatred and resistance on their part. Didi-Huberman follows this path from complicity to antipathy in one of Charcot's favorite "cases," that of Augustine, whose image crops up again and again in the Iconographie. Augustine's virtuosic performance of hysteria ultimately became one of self-sacrifice, seen in pictures of ecstasy, crucifixion, and silent cries.

Towards the South Pole Aboard the "Francais"
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.18 $247pp, highly decorative boards, hardback, New. A beautifully produced reprint of the original French edition. The first French expedition to the Antarctic set sail in August 1903 under the command of Jean-Baptiste Charcot. He had sailed the waterways of Europe until, in 1902, he visited Iceland and the Faroes. He reached the Arctic Circle and his taste for polar voyaging was established. On his return he commissioned a vessel to be built - Francais. By this stage, although an amateur, Charcot had become quite well known, though Scott referred to himwith possibly a touch of disparagementas 'the polar gentleman'. In August 1903 he set sail. Charcot had designed the ship so that each man could have a private space of his own and he was particularly proud of his choice of food and wine and the fact that fresh bread was baked three times a week. His diary reveals a man of culture and sensitivity. He charted new coasts and undertook scientific work. This is a fascinating insight into a totally different style of Antarctic exploration. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.
