The benefit derivable from English translations of the Sacred Book is, in principle, limited because, first, the Qur'an is not a "book" but a collection of passages revealed to Muhammad over a period of about twenty-three years and, second, because the Qur'an is not really translatable. This does not mean that the Qur'an should not be translated. Each entry word is followed by lists, in Hebrew, of basic meanings, related words, and combined forms in which the word appears. Then comes the listing of each appearance of the word, with context and in canonical order. These Hebrew "quotations" are numbered, and the editor puts these numbers to good use. Each of the basic meaning for the entry word is folowed by numbers indicating the instances in which the word bear this meaning. And each combined form similarly is succeeded by numbers directing one to the passages in which it appears.
