It describes spaces of functions such as Sobolev, Lipschitz, Besov rearrangement-invariant function spaces and interpolation of operators. Other topics include Weierstrauss and best approximation theorems, properties of polynomials and splines. It contains history and proofs with an emphasis on principal results.

In the last 30 years, Approximation Theory has undergone wonderful develop­ ment, with many new theories appearing in this short interval. This book has its origin in the wish to adequately describe this development, in particular, to rewrite the short 1966 book of G. G. Lorentz, "Approximation of Functions." Soon after 1980, R. A. DeVore and Lorentz joined forces for this purpose. The outcome has been their "Constructive Approximation" (1993), volume 303 of this series. References to this book are given as, for example rCA, p.201]. Later, M. v. Golitschek and Y. Makovoz joined Lorentz to produce the present book, as a continuation of the first. Completeness has not been our goal. In some of the theories, our exposition offers a selection of important, representative theorems, some other cases are treated more systematically. As in the first book, we treat only approximation of functions of one real variable. Thus, functions of several variables, complex approximation or interpolation are not treated, although complex variable methods appear often.

The notes that eventually became this book were written between 1977 and 1985 for the course called Constructive Combinatorics at the University of Minnesota. This is a one-quarter (10 week) course for upper level undergraduate students. The class usually consists of mathematics and computer science majors, with an occasional engineering student. Several graduate students in computer science also attend. At Minnesota, Constructive Combinatorics is the third quarter of a three quarter sequence. The fIrst quarter, Enumerative Combinatorics, is at the level of the texts by Bogart [Bo], Brualdi [Br], Liu [Li] or Tucker [Tu] and is a prerequisite for this course. The second quarter, Graph Theory and Optimization, is not a prerequisite. We assume that the students are familiar with the techniques of enumeration: basic counting principles, generating functions and inclusion/exclusion. This course evolved from a course on combinatorial algorithms. That course contained a mixture of graph algorithms, optimization and listing algorithms. The computer assignments generally consisted of testing algorithms on examples. While we felt that such material was useful and not without mathematical content, we did not think that the course had a coherent mathematical focus. Furthermore, much of it was being taught, or could have been taught, elsewhere. Graph algorithms and optimization, for instance, were inserted into the graph theory course where they naturally belonged. The computer science department already taught some of the material: the simpler algorithms in a discrete mathematics course; effIciency of algorithms in a more advanced course.

Professor Lodder is a leading specialist in art of the Russian avant-garde which flourished during the 1910s and 1920s. She is the author of a major study of Russian Constructivism, acclaimed as the standard work on the subject, and with her husband has written an important monograph on the Russian-born sculptor Naum Gabo and edited a collection of the artist's writings. The present volume brings together her articles of the past twenty years, many of which focus on particular aspects of avant-garde responses to the social and political upheavals of the period, especially the Russian Revolution of 1917. Her essays cover subjects such as Vladimir Tatlin's seminal structure, The Model for a Monument to the Third International of 1920, the evolution of public monuments, the cultural debates during the revolutionary period, the development of new teaching programmes, and the implementation of Constructivist ideas in photography and design for textiles, clothing and the theatre. Her interests extend to International Constructivism and to the impact that Russian ideas made on the theory and practice of avant-garde figures working in Central and Eastern Europe during the 1920s. More recently she has concentrated on developments in the 1910s, including the innovative work of Kazimir Malevich and the relationship between art and science. The author has supplied additional notes to the original articles, which draw attention to subsequent research. Since the collapse of Communism in the erstwhile Soviet Union, public collections and archives have become more accessible and the new information has substantially altered existing preconceptions of the period. Occasionally, the need to correct errors exposed by recent developments in the field has involved making some extensive changes to the main body of the text.

These algorithms provide an incremental way of building neural networks with reduced topologies for classification problems. Furthermore, these techniques produce not only the multilayer topologies but the value of the connecting synaptic weights that are determined automatically by the constructing algorithm, avoiding the risk of becoming trapped in local minima as might occur when using gradient descent algorithms such as the popular back-propagation. In most cases the convergence of the constructing algorithms is guaranteed by the method used. Constructive methods for building neural networks can potentially create more compact and robust models which are easily implemented in hardware and used for embedded systems. Thus a growing amount of current research in neural networks is oriented towards this important topic.
