Cunard's Queens Revealed: The Evolution of Six Great Passenger Ships
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.37 $For the first time, Cunard has three new flagship "Queens" leading its fleet-Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth-continuing in a long line of majestic, luxurious, and prestigious passenger ships named after queens, which started with the launch of Queen Mary during the Depression in 1934. This book pays tribute to the illustrious career of the QE2 as well as the glorious new chapter in ocean-going travel represented by the new generation of ships. Author David L. Williams was granted access to the Cunard photo archive, on-board access to the new Queens to take photographs, as well as invitations to interview key personnel on the ships. This new title includes a comparison of the six built Queens, tracking the evolution of these famous ships influenced by technological construction, social factors, and developments. Produced in an attractive landscape format, it also focuses on the passenger experience and expectation.

The New Cunard Queens: Queen Elizabeth 2, Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $A lavish tribute to the world's bestknown shipping line, this beautifully illustrated book takes an intriguing look at three famous cruise liners: the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2, which, when launched in 1967, was considered the last of the great ocean liners; Queen Mary, which entered service in 2004 as the largest and most expensive passenger ship ever built; and Queen Victoria, launched in December 2007 for exclusive cruises out of Southampton. With an entertaining mixture of maritime history and contemporary analysis, the author tells the story of Queen Elizabeth 2, the Queen Mary 2's first years, and the conception, building, and maiden voyage of Queen Victoria.

Cunard Line: A Fleet History [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 103.27 $A4 format. 700+ illustrations. The individual histories of 310 ships from Unicorn in 1840 to the current Queen Elizabeth are featured with over 700 illustrations, many in colour. Individual chapters also cover each aspect of the company's operations including the transatlantic cargo fleet, cruise ships, tankers and bulk carriers, container ships and reefers and managed ships. Although many books have been written about Cunard's passenger ships in the 20th century, few have covered the 19th century fleet in much detail, particularly the important Mediterranean services. The cargo fleet has also been poorly served, especially with the carriage of cargo being as important as passenger carryings during the first 150 years of Cunard's existence. Little has also been written about the company tenders and the many ships managed by Cunard during both World Wars. Using original source material, this book redresses this imbalance with the most comprehensive history ever written about Cunard and its ships. Great care has also been taken with the layout of the book so that it is easy to follow. Not only is there a detailed index, individual chapters also tell the story of the ships in each aspect of the company's operation, including the trans-Atlantic liners, cargo fleet, cruise ships, tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, reefers and managed ships. The front cover of the book has a specially-commissioned painting of the original Queen Elizabeth by the renowned marine artist Stephen Card. Written by the well-known maritime author, Peter Newall, also the author of Mauretania, Triumph and Resurrection, the definitive fleet histories of the Union-Castle and Orient Lines, and Cape Town Shipping, it is hoped that Cunard Line, A Fleet History will become the standard reference for the 173-year-old Cunard Line. A full index of ship names is included.

RMS Caronia: Cunard's Green Goddess (Classic Liners)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.49 $Previously unpublished photographs and rare memorabilia, including work from maritime artist Robert Lloyd, enrich this photographic history of one of Cunard's most beloved liners Painted in shades of green and known affectionately as the "Green Goddess," Cunard’s Caronia of 1949 ushered in the era of modern cruising, and here is her incredible story. She represented Britain’s recovery and the rebirth of the world’s maritime industry after the devastation of World War II, designed almost exclusively for an untapped passenger market: luxury cruising. With such illustrious Cunard predecessors as the Queen Mary, the ill-fated Lusitania, and the record-breaker Mauretania, Caronia was an instant favorite with the world’s rich and famous. She gathered an exclusive, often American, clientele—the "mink and diamonds set"—who sailed on her year after year. Many passengers lived on board for years, giving her the air of an ultra-wealthy country club. While under tow to the breaker’s yard, she met her end on the rocks at Guam after running aground during a typhoon. Her subsequent salvage was the largest ever undertaken by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Berengaria: Cunard's "Happy Ship"
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.08 $At the turn of the twentieth century a race was on between the European shipping companies to build the largest liners in the world. From Cunard had come the Mauretania and Lusitania, from White Star the Olympic, Titanic and Britannic and from the Hamburg Amerika line came Albert Ballin's trio of liners; Imperator, Vaterland and Bismark. The first of these three Hamburg Amerika liners was, when launched, the largest ship in the world, capable of carrying 5,000 passengers in varying qualities of accommodation from emigrants in steerage to millionaires in her suites. Imperator had a short useful life of only one year before war started in 1914. Docked for the duration she was, at the end of the war, passed to the British Government and sold to Cunard as a replacement for the ill-fated Lusitania. Recomissioned and overhauled she became the flagship of Cunard and was renamed Berengaria, after Richard the Lionheart's wife. She joined her new consorts, Aquitania and Mauretania on the Atlantic shuttle service and was a common sight on the Atlantic for the next seventeen years. Sent for scrapping in 1938, she was broken up to the keel by 1939 and the hull was scrapped after the Second World War.

High Tea on the Cunard Queens : A Light-Hearted Look at Life at Sea
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.64 $This amusing insight into Cunard’s legendary liners begins more than 50 years ago when the author joined the original Queen Mary as an entertainments officer, when a part of the job was "bumbling" the passengers while keeping a wary eye out for professional gamblers criss-crossing the Atlantic, and there was bingo and dance bands, novelty dancing and fancy-dress parades, and a primitive disco with a monster jukebox. Paul Curtis recounts the stories of the ships, the antics of passengers and crews, and much more besides. His stories include the time Yehudi Menuhin refused to play for the passengers, but played for the crew instead; finding Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and evangelist Billy Graham among the bingo players; and being called to deal with two amorous passengers making use of the grand piano in the first class lounge. Just turning these pages releases a sniff of the sea and a whiff of champagne. This frank and funny account mixes Cunard history with personal anecdote and vividly reveals how passenger and crew life have changed over the years across the Cunard liners.

Transatlantic: Samuel Cunard, Isambard Brunel, and the Great Atlantic Steamships
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.35 $A stirring narrative of the rapid development of the great transatlantic steamships, from paddle-wheelers to the sleek luxury greyhounds of the modern era -- and the men who designed and ran them.During the nineteenth century, the roughest but most important ocean passage in the world lay between Britain and the United States. Bridging the Atlantic Ocean by steamship was a defining, remarkable feat of the era. Over time, Atlantic steamships became the largest, most complex machines yet devised. They created a new transatlantic world of commerce and travel, reconciling former Anglo-American enemies and bringing millions of emigrants to transform the United States. In Transatlantic, the experience of crossing the Atlantic is re-created in stunning detail from the varied perspectives of first class, steerage, officers, and crew. The dynamic evolution of the Atlantic steamer is traced from Brunel's Great Western of 1838 to Cunard's Mauretania of 1907, the greatest steamship ever built. Set against the classic tension of modern technology contending with a formidable natural environment, the story is rife with disasters. The key element is steam power: the universal, magical, transforming microchip of the nineteenth century.
