Excerpt from Dodson Genealogy: 1600-1907The information thus obtained has been by an examination of a vast amount of material, viz., church and parish records, colonial records, old family Bibles, tombstones, old letters, wills, deeds, land warrants, surveys, field notes of early surveyors, tax lists, signatures, &c., besides data from a collection of unindexed papers of records, of Bucks, Chester and Northampton Counties, - in all, about one hundred and fifty volumes, preserved in the Historical Society Library of Pennsylvania, in the Maryland Historical Library in Baltimore, and Archives in Annapolis. Also records of Friend's meetings in England, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Burke's Peerages, Fairbairn's Crests and Coats of Arms, and Luttrell's Annals of 1OO Years.The earliest records known of the Dodson name in this country are as follows:1st. Colonial Annals of Virginia mention "Dodson's Plantation" in 1632.2nd. Dean's History of Scituate, Massachusetts, records the name of Anthony Dodson and descendants from 1650 to 1705 (page 263).3rd, Maryland Colonial Records, in the old State House at Annapolis, mention the arrival there of a John Dodson in 1656, followed later by a son John and a daughter Katharine. These Johns settled in Calvert and Charles Counties. Their wills are also of record there in 1733 and later.4th. Chapter 2: “Dodson Descendants from the Fifth Generation to the Present”, contains descendants from each person in the fifth generation to the extent that information is available. Some of these lineage’s have been worked out from census and courthouse records, although much of this material has been donated by Dodson relatives and researchers. Many of these lineage’s come down to current generations. Stephen Dodson Ramseur, born in Lincolnton, North Carolina, in 1837, compiled an enviable record as a brigadier in the Army of Northern Virginia. Commissioned major general the day after his twenty-seventh birthday, he was the youngest West Pointer to achieve that rank in the Confederate army. He later showed great skill as a divisional leader in the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaigns before he was fatally wounded at Cedar Creek on 19 October of that year.
