Doctor Dolittle's Garden
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.37 $Doctor Dolittle’s Garden is structurally the most disorganised of Hugh Lofting’s Doctor Dolittle books. The first part would fit very well into Doctor Dolittle’s Zoo, which this book follows. The rest of the book forms a reasonably coherent narrative. Doctor Dolittle’s assistant, Tommy Stubbins, reports on Professor Quetch, curator of the Dog Museum in the Home for Crossbred Dogs. Meanwhile, the doctor has learnt insect languages and hears ancient tales of a giant race of insects. Fascinated, the doctor plans a voyage to find them — but before he does so, one arrives in his garden. Hugh John Lofting was a trained as a civil engineer and author who created the character of Doctor Dolittle; one of the classics of children’s literature. Hugh Lofting’s doctor from Puddleby-on-the-Marsh who could speak to animals first saw light in the author’s illustrated letters to children, written from the trenches during World War I when actual news, he later said, was either too horrible or too dull. Eight more books followed, and after Lofting’s death two more volumes, composed of short unpublished pieces, appeared. The series has been adapted for film and television many times, for stage twice, and for radio.

The Story of Doctor Dolittle: Original Version
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.58 $This is the original version of a story first published in 1920 about a medical doctor with a remarkable ability: He can talk to and understand animals. This gets him into trouble with his human patients. Because he keeps some of his animals in his office, his patients leave him. Dr. Dolittle starts treating animals, when they get sick. Dr. Dolittle has no money, because all of his patients have left him. He learns that there is a serious illness among the monkeys in Africa. The monkeys will all die and only Dr. Dolittle knows how to save him. So, Dr. Dolittle must go to Africa. Although Dr. Dolittle has no money, a man loans him a small boat so he can sail to Africa. He can only take a few of his animals with him. Upon arriving in Africa, the king there immediately puts Doctor Dolittle in prison.

The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.87 $This Newbery Medal–winning adventure, the second book in the ever-popular Doctor Dolittle series, finds the physician who can talk to animals setting sail in search of a missing colleague. Join the good doctor and his new assistant, nine-year-old Tommy Stubbins, as they hunt for Long Arrow, the world's greatest naturalist. Together with Jip the Dog, Polynesia the Parrot, and other memorable characters, the doctor and Tommy travel from their home in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh to the Mediterranean sea and South America, braving a shipwreck on a mysterious island and encountering an enigmatic creature at the bottom of the ocean. "Any child who is not given the opportunity to make the acquaintance of this rotund, kindly, and enthusiastic doctor/naturalist and all of his animal friends will miss out on something important," declared wildlife biologist Jane Goodall. Doctor Dolittle has delighted readers for over a century, ever since Hugh Lofting enlivened his letters from the trenches of World War I with fancifully illustrated tales of a man with a special gift for communication. The doctor remains a beloved figure whose concern for the environment and promotion of peaceful coexistence among all the planet's creatures form a fine example for readers of all ages.

Doctor Dolittle's Post Office
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.83 $Doctor Dolittle's Post Office is the third of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books. Set on the West Coast of Africa, the book follows the episodic format of most other books in the series. In the beginning of the book, Doctor Dolittle helps to capture a slave trader's ship, then organizes the postal service of a small African kingdom, Fantippo, ruled over by King Koko. Over the course of later chapters, he discovers a hidden island populated by prehistoric creatures, gets thrown into another African jail, invents animal alphabets, and defeats at least two armies. Each of the animals in the Dolittle family also tells a personal story. The postal program grows into a worldwide postal and publishing service for the benefit of animals everywhere.

Doctor Dolittle's Delusion: Animals and the Uniqueness of Human Language
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 79.68 $Can animals be taught a human language and use it to communicate? Or is human language unique to human beings, just as many complex behaviors of other species are uniquely theirs? This engrossing book explores communication and cognition in animals and humans from a linguistic point of view and asserts that animals are not capable of acquiring or using human language.Stephen R. Anderson explains what is meant by communication, the difference between communication and language, and the essential characteristics of language. Next he examines a variety of animal communication systems, including bee dances, frog vocalizations, bird songs, and alarm calls and other vocal, gestural, and olfactory communication among primates. Anderson then compares these to human language, including signed languages used by the deaf. Arguing that attempts to teach human languages or their equivalents to the great apes have not succeeded in demonstrating linguistic abilities in nonhuman species, he concludes that animal communication systems intriguing and varied though they may be do not include all the essential properties of human language. Animals can communicate, but they can’t talk.
