1903 like so many years was 1-of crisis in the life of Edvard Munch. In the months prior he had been called to the side of a lover under threat of suicide and found himself missing 2-joints from his ring finger after a possibly self-inflicted gunshot wound. The lover left him and he escaped to Germany where he would work on comissioned portraits of the children of a wealthy patron and admirer. He also painted several landscapes around this time of which this is one. Despite their brightness the yellows seem sickly and the sky is a ghastly purple-white. From foreground to background we see trees begin branchless become full and return again to a barren state. Munch balances ambiguous sweeps of color with divisory geometric lines and planes to create a rich and intriguing interpretation of the landscape.
