Emancipation the Union Army and the
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.32 $The Union army's overwhelming vote for Abraham Lincoln's reelection in 1864 has led many Civil War scholars to conclude that the soldiers supported the Republican Party and its effort to abolish slavery. In Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln Jonathan W. White challenges this reigning paradigm in Civil War historiography, arguing instead that the soldier vote in the presidential election of 1864 is not a reliable index of the army's ideological motivation or political sentiment. Although 78 percent of the soldiers' votes were cast for Lincoln, White contends that this was not wholly due to a political or social conversion to the Republican Party. Rather, he argues, historians have ignored mitigating factors such as voter turnout, intimidation at the polls, and how soldiers voted in nonpresidential elections in 1864.While recognizing that many soldiers changed their views on slavery and emancipation during the war, White suggests that a considerable number still rejected the Republican platform, and that many who voted for Lincoln disagreed with his views on slavery. He likewise explains that many northerners considered a vote for the Democratic ticket as treasonous and an admission of defeat.Using previously untapped court-martial records from the National Archives, as well as manuscript collections from across the country, White convincingly revises many commonly held assumptions about the Civil War era and provides a deeper understanding of the Union Army.

Emancipation and the End of Slavery (Debating Amer Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.46 $Embracing an argument-based model for teaching history, the Debating American History series encourages students to participate in a contested, evidence-based discourse about the human past. Each book poses a question that historians debate--How democratic was the U.S. Constitution? or Why did civil war erupt in the United States in 1861?--and provides abundant primary sources so that students can make their own efforts at interpreting the evidence. They can then use that analysis to construct answers to the big question that frames the debate and argue in support of their position.Emancipation and the End of Slavery poses this big question: How and why did emancipation become a goal of the Union war effort?

Emancipation and Reconstruction
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.57 $An adept distillation of the scholarship that has been produced since the 1950s-thoughtfully reorganized and updated to include a consideration of new works that have appeared since 1987-this new edition of Michael Perman's highly popular book examines the ways in which historians have interpreted what was perhaps the largest program of domestic reform undertaken in the history of the United States. In addition to accessing the impact of what might best be described as a maturation of the Revisionist history of Emancipation and Reconstruction, Perman introduces previously neglected areas of interest that have assumed new significance, such as the nature of the southern labor system after slavery and the role of African Americans in Reconstruction politics. The result is a lucid portrait of the post-Civil War years, one reluctant to employ such simplistic and judgemental terms as success or failure in assessing the complex problems of rebuilding the nation.

The Emancipation of the Jews in Poland, 1780-1870 (Jewish Society and Culture)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 217.77 $632 pages. "The legal emancipation of the Jews in most European countries was one of the most significant achievements of 19th century liberalism. The establishment of formal legal equality for the Jews was intended to heal deep divisions between the Jewish and Christian worlds, transforming the Jews from a national religious community - linked by a common culture, a common religion and a set of shared rules governing all aspects of life - into citizens of their respective countries of residence. Emancipation (and the assimilation and acculturation which would follow) would, according to the confident optimism of the liberal idealogues and their Jewish supporters, transform Jews into Englishmen and Frenchmen of the Hebrew faith. The explanation of how and why a proto-nation of Jews developed in Poland is central to modern Jewish history. In this work, set against the backdrop of 19th-century Europe and the Polish struggles for independence, Artur Eisenbach provides a comprehensive account of a fascinating chapter in the development of modern Europe.
