Katharina Fritsch (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.02 $This is the first major survey in English of the work of Katharina Fritsch, one of the most important artists to emerge in Europe in the last 20 years. Ranging from the colossal to the miniature, Fritsch's sculptures and installations bring to life figures and objects that already exist in our imaginations. Using modern manufacturing techniques, Fritsch fabricates people and things that seem to have their origins in mythology, literature, and religion; they hover between purity and danger, innocent yet also unnerving. Combining a singular inner vision with an absolute material precision, Fritsch's sculptures border on the surreal.

Katharina Fritsch
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.00 $Katharina Fritsch is one of the most important artists to have emerged in Europe in the last twenty years. This book, and the accompanying exhibition, provide the first major survey of her work in this country. Fritsch's work - predominantly sculpture - is both general and specific, recreating types of objects that already exist in the world, and fabricating a kind of platonic version of them to trigger collective recognition. A case of books with no titles or texts symbolises the idea of books; a yellow madonna encapsulates all figures of worship; a group of rats, that in their formal composition and colossal scale suggest a collective of folk stories and myths. At the same time these objects are created according to her own singular inner vision. Each sculpture or installation is made with absolute precision, almost surreal in their perfect realisations of people or objects in the world. Fritsch is also interested in craftsmanship and the traditions around the Arts and Crafts and Bauhaus movements, often producing her works as multiples that can be bought by ordinary people as ornaments for the home. Katharina Fritsch lives and works in Dusseldorf. A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1997, which then transferred to Basel in 1997. She also exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and 1999. Recent show venues include The White Cube in London, and the Matthew Marks Gallery in New York.

Parkett No. 87 Cerith Wyn Evans, Katharina Fritsch, Annette Kelm, Kelley Walker (Parkett Series with Contemporary Artists)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.28 $Parkett continues its 25th anniversary with a text by Marina Warner on the Trans-Atlantic cable; a persuasive argument by Richard Phillips for the faux-naïf painter Adolf Dietrich (1877-1957); and Philip Kaiser's examination of the Met's recent Pictures Generation show. London-based Cerith Wyn Evans is perhaps best known for his hypnotic neon signs; as Michael Archer notes, Walter Benjamin saw content not just in the sign but in its reflection. Both Pablo Lafuente and Jan Verwoert name London's magnetic fields of the 1970s as a major influence. Katharina Fritsch is best known for her monochromatic figures cast in plaster. Jessica Morgan sees these immaculately articulated forms as "amplifications," while Jean-Pierre Criqui responds to just the opposite: their ghostliness. Annette Kelm's photographs possess a frightening sense of obsolescence; according to Beatrix Ruf, their baffling stories begin with a detail that seems to have lost its potency. Kelley Walker's work embraces contradiction and contrast, as Johanna Burton witnessed upon viewing the eclectic collection of artifacts and memorabilia in his studio. Antek Walczak evaluates Walker's appropriation of the recycling logo, and Glenn Ligon addresses the anxiety behind his African-American imagery. Allen Ruppersberg supplies an insert for the issue.

Ravens and Red Lipstick: Japanese Photography since 1945
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.24 $This book is an accessible and visually rich study of Japanese photography since 1945 by an experienced curator specializing in Japanese art and culture. This rich volume provides one of the first overviews of Japanese photography to be published in English. Drawing on extensive research, Lena Fritsch traces the development of Japanese photography chronologically, from the severity of post-war Realism to the diverse ingenuity of photography in contemporary Japan. Interspersed are fascinating original interviews with some of the most influential photographers of each era, including Daido Moriyama.Ravens and Red Lipstick offers a visually bold survey of Japanese photography’s recent history. Fritsch masterfully frames each movement with their business, education, and art-institutional backdrops―she shows the consumerism and intense political debates of 1960s and ’70s Japan, for example, to be central to the rough style of the “Provoke” artists. Fritsch’s great achievement is to bring observations from a range of disciplines to bear on her commentary with imagination and clarity. As a result, this comprehensively illustrated volume is both an accessible introduction and an illuminating work of analysis of Japanese photography since 1945. c. 200 illustrations

Healing Appalachia: Sustainable Living through Appropriate Technology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 80.00 $Healing Appalachia is a practical guide for environmentally conscious residents of Appalachia and beyond. It is also the first book to apply "appropriate technology," or the most basic technology that can effectively achieve the desired result, to this specific region. Authors Al Fritsch and Paul Gallimore have performed over 200 environmental resource assessments in thirty-three states. They bring this knowledge to bear as they examine thirty low-cost, people-friendly, and environmentally benign appropriate technologies that can be put to work today in Appalachia. They discuss such issues as renewable energy and energy conservation, food preservation and gardening, forest management, land use, transportation, water conservation, proper waste disposal, and wildlife protection. They pay close attention to the practicality of each technique according to affordability, ease of use, and ecological soundness. Their subjects range from solar home heating to greenhouses, from aquaculture to compost toilets, from organic gardening to wildlife restoration and enhancement, and from solar cars to microhydropower facilities. Their discussions of each topic benefit from the knowledge gained from thirty years of practical experience at environmental demonstration centers and public interest and educational organizations. Each section of the book includes details on construction and maintenance, as well as resources for locating further information, making this an essential volume for everyone who cares about the future of Appalachia.

Charles Ray: Sculpture, 1997-2014
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 158.24 $Charles Ray (born 1953) is one of America’s most outstanding contemporary sculptors. Like Jeff Koons and Katharina Fritsch, he has developed a new kind of plastic figuration, as can be seen in his white-painted steel sculpture “Boy with Frog” (2009), whose recent installation on the Punta della Dogana in Venice drew a great deal of critical and popular attention. Despite its apparent naturalism, Ray’s oversized figure of a nude boy frolicking animatedly, even rabidly, with the animal world, verges upon the classical. “Horse and Rider,” a self-portrait of the artist on horseback (2014), likewise revives the traditional images of the horseback rider and the hero of the American West, but in a way that is decidedly anti-heroic. This volume offers a comprehensive monograph on Ray’s sculptural works of recent years.

Psychoaktiv. 1989-2019.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.32 $A Pioneer of Field Research into Bodies and Spatial Relations. Pia Stadtbäumer (b. Münster, 1959; lives and works in Düsseldorf) isa leading exponent of the rediscovery of the human figure insculpture. Like fellow artists such as Katharina Fritsch, PaulMcCarthy, Thomas Schütte, and Kiki Smith, she rose to renown inthe 1980s with now-canonical works that pursued a probingexamination and exposition of the representation of the body in arapidly changing contemporary world. In Stadtbäumer's early oeuvre, the focus is on the engagement with bodies in sculptures andinstallations―the proportions, demeanor, and modelling of theprotagonists of her compositions are spare, restricted to thetraditional role models of man, woman, and child. Anonymous andexchangeable, they become active protagonists in the exhibitionspace only by virtue of their unconventional gestures. Over the years, the artist has allowed other irritations to inform her sculptures, intervening into the physicality of her figures: outsize hanging arms, fragile hermaphrodites standing before the viewer, periwigs andattires molded after models from the Rococo. Defying the apocalypticdiscourse of the post-human, Stadtbäumer's sculptural gesturesevince organically unfolding and inventive variations on the nature ofman. The indispensable monograph offers a synopsis of three decades inStadtbäumer's career (1989–2019) and illustrates her equallyconceptual and intuitive approach. With a survey of her oeuvre byJulian Heynen and essays by Prof. Beate Söntgen and Ariadne vonSchirach.

The Body as a Screen: Japanese Art Photography of the 1990s
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.89 $This book examines the human body as a motif in Japanese photographic art of the 1990s, with particular reference to socio-cultural issues. Lena Fritsch analyses photographs by Ishiuchi Miyako, Izima Kaoru, Mori Mariko, Morimura Yasumasa, Yamanaka Manabu and Yanagi Miwa, focussing on problems of social and national identity, gender and religion. How could Morimura's gender be defined in his "Portrait (Futago)"? What kind of 'social codes' are presented in Mori's "Tea Ceremony III"? The examined works have all been presented in the 'Western' art world. By discussing ten images in a detailed and critical way, Fritsch's monograph provides a counterbalance to the short and commercial texts of exhibition catalogues and magazines. Furthermore, it explores the Japanese context of the works, such as the historical foundations of art and photography in Japan, the structures of the 1990s art system, and the presence of Japanese photographs in a 'Western' art market. What is offered here has not been attempted before; there are few academic studies on Japanese photographs of the 1990s, let alone on their representations of the body. As both a 'Western' art historian and somebody whose personal history is influenced by the Japanese culture, Fritsch 'interprets' Japanese images to 'Western' readers. At the same time, she presents new viewpoints, which might also be interesting to a Japanese audience.
