Gillespie County (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.49 $The Society for the Protection of German Immigrants was formed in Germany in 1842 by a group of German noblemen with both philanthropic and commercial goals for a settlement in Texas. Over 5,200 German immigrants arrived on the Texas coast between October 1845 and April 1846. Lack of adequate funding and planning, as well as the continued war between Texas and Mexico, left many immigrants stranded at Indianola without sufficient food, water, shelter, or transportation inland. Hundreds perished on the Texas coast, on the journey inland, and in cholera epidemics. Traveling by wagon, cart, and on foot, leaving behind much of what they had brought from their homeland, thousands made their way toward the land that was to be their new home. Through the courage, tenacity, and diligence of the German pioneers who survived, “Friedrichsburg” was founded. Today, Fredericksburg, the county seat, continues in the cooperative spirit of these determined German pioneers, honoring their traditions, heritage, and culture.

Dizzy Gillespie: The Man Who Changed My Life: From the Memoirs of Arturo Sandoval
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 84.99 $2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Dizzy Gillespie, a master entertainer and one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. This book, from the memoirs of Cuban jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, celebrates the relationship and influence Dizzy had with Arturo and his family. It tracks the remarkable story of how the two met in Cuba during a very restrictive period and the eventual role Dizzy would play in Arturo’s flight to freedom. It also recounts the modest start and parallels that exist between the two musicians as well as their career developments. Dizzy was so talented and creative, a true original, and a statesman on an international stage, but one of his greatest achievements and contributions to music was not only the discovery but the encouragement and promotion of Arturo Sandoval.

Gregory Gillespie
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $"Gregory Gillespie is unique among the younger generation of American painters," Abram Lerner, director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, tells us. "Few artists have been so bold in renouncing the formulas of current fashion or have fought so zealously to recapture the drama of the subject in art." And in the opinion of a noted art critic, John Canaday, Gillespie "might just emerge as the most important American painter at work today." Gillespie's highly personal art was previously known mainly to fellow artists, collectors, and some critics. With this volume-a fully illustrated and definitive record of the artist's first museum retrospective exhibition- Gillespie's work is brought to a wide audience for the first time. Mr. Lerner organized the exhibition, which was conceived to trace the development of Gillespie's painting from his early visionary works to the larger-scale works of the mid-1970s, marked by extreme realism and compulsive clarity of detail. Born in Roselle Park, New Jersey, in 1936, Gillespie studied at Cooper Union in New York and at the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1962 he was awarded the first of two Fulbright-Hays grants to study in Italy. After two years in Florence, and with the support of three consecutive Chester Dale Fellowships, he worked in Rome for six more years. The effect of Italy is explicit in Gillespie's early paintings. He absorbed the works of Masaccio, Carlo Crivelli, and the sixteenth-century Venetian colorists. Stronger than any direct reference to particular masters, however, is the mood and feel of the ambience of contemporary Italy. An even greater empathy may have existed between Gillespie's essentially romantic sensibility and that of the German and Flemish old masters. The sharpness of detail, sensuous color, and dramatic emphasis in his paintings have elements in common with works by Grünewald, Bruegel, and Bosch.
