Seasons of Ceremonies Rites and Rituals in Mexico and Guatemala [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 80.00 $Santa Fe. 2021. . Museum of New Mexico Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 9780890136683. Introduction by Anne Frej. Essays by Frine Castillo Badillo, Nicolasa Chávez, Philip E. Coyle, and Gary H. Gossen. 164 duotone plates, 11 ½ x 10 landscape. 240 pages. hardcover. . . . keywords: Photography Guatemala Mexico Ritual. DESCRIPTION - This book is a captivating visual record of the rich, still-alive traditions in Mexico and Guatemala conveyed through striking duotone photographs of community events in the region that take place within an annual cycle that refers to its pre-Columbian past, agricultural seasons, and Catholic traditions. The seasons of life are represented by colorful celebrations and rituals commemorating Mesoamerican history, culture, and religion. Beginning with the early December celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico's Yucatán, Bill Frej photographed thirteen celebrations including feast days of patron saints in Chiapas, Mexico, and Rabinal, Guatemala; the Carnival celebrations before Lent; Holy Week before Easter; and finally, the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, Mexico. Three of the celebrations are distinct and unlike the others - the Masked Dance of Abraham and Isaac in Yucatán, Mexico; the Puáaxku jitsE in Santa Teresa, Nayarit, Mexico; and the Achí masked drama in Rabinal in Guatemala's highlands. The photographs capture the traditional clothing, dances, and elaborate processions and behind-the-scenes preparations - women cook and decorate churches, children gather flowers and pine boughs, men and boys paint their faces and bodies, and everyone prepares for the days ahead. Four essays by scholars and extended photo captions provide details on the celebrations and further illuminate the subjects, providing historical and cultural context on these enduring folk celebrations. inventory #46404

The Laws of Human Relations and the Rules of Human Action Derived Therefrom
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 19.75 $In the history of the exact sciences there have been a number of momentous contributions that were not recognized until years after they were made: Carnot's insights in thermodynamics, Galois's in algebra, Mendel's in genetics and, in the social science of political economy, Hermann Gossen's Laws of Human Relations, which laid the foundation of modern utility theory. This is the first English translation of a book initially published in 1854 that provides historians with the link necessary for accurately describing the development of economics as a mathematical and analytic discipline. Gossen's important and original work was ignored in its own time and, until now, surfaced periodically only in the context of other studies. Hermann Gossen (1810-1859) never held an academic position and resigned from a lackluster career in the Prussian Civil Service in order to complete work on his book. "I believe," he wrote of it, "that my discoveries enable me to point out to man with unfailing certainty the path that he must follow in order to accomplish completely the purpose of his life." The path that he sketched for his readers - which was to be laid down in accordance with the principle of diminishing marginal utility and the corresponding theorem of the maximization of utility - preceded William Stanley Jevon's, Carl Menger's and Leon Walras's versions of what was in the mid- to late 1800s a new theory of value and the basis of modern economics. Why his work remained in obscurity is a puzzle teased out in Georgescu-Roegen's long introductory essay on Gossen's life and the significance of this book. Publication of The Laws of Human Relations is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Four Creations: An Epic Story of the Chiapas Mayas (Volume 245) (The Civilization of the American Indian Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.68 $Four Creations is a collection of seventy-four stories told to Gary H. Gossen by Tzotzil Maya storytellers in San Juan Chamula, Mexico. Spanning four cycles of creations, destructions, and restorations from the dawn of cosmic order to the present era, this epic history reveals a distinctly Maya vision of the universe, grand in scope yet leavened with local humor, irony, and the Tzotzil narrators’ own critical commentaries. Four Creations includes mythic accounts of modern history, such as the Wars of Independence, the Mexican Revolution, and the current Protestant evangelical movement. Given in both transcribed Tzotzil and English translations, the texts are enlivened by more than one hundred Maya Indian drawings and by Gossen’s extensive ethnographic and historical notes based on his conversations with the narrators and more than thirty-five years of study. Miguel León-Portílla’s Foreword situates Four Creations within the broader context of Mesoamerican culture and traditions, while the Afterword by Jan Rus relates this work to recent events in modern-day Chamula.

Chile 1973. The Other 9/11: The Downfall of Salvador Allende (Latin America@War)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $In 1970, Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens, a physician and leftist politician, was elected the President of Chile. Involved in political life for nearly 40 years, Allende adopted a policy of nationalization of industries and collectivization – measures that brought him on a collision course with the legislative and judicial branches of the government, and then the center-right majority of the Chilean Congress. Before long, calls were issued for his overthrow by force. Indeed, on 11 September 1973, the military – supported by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the USA - moved to oust Allende, and surrounded La Moneda Palace. After refusing a safe passage, Allende gave his farewell speech on live radio, and La Moneda was then subjected to air strikes and an assault by the Chilean Army. Allende committed suicide.Following Allende’s death, General Augusto Pinochet installed a military junta, thus ending almost four decades of uninterrupted democratic rule in the country. His repressive regime remained in power until 1990.Starting with an in-depth study of the Chilean military, paramilitary forces and different leftist movements in particular, this volume traces the history of the build-up and the ultimate clash during the coup of 11 September 1973.Providing minute details about the motivation, organization and equipment of all involved parties, it also explains why the Chilean military not only launched the coup but also imposed itself in power, and how the leftist movements reacted Illustrated with over 100 photographs, color profiles, and maps describing the equipment, colors, markings and tactics of the Chilean military and its opponents, it is a unique study into a well-known yet much under-studied aspect of Latin America’s military history.
