The Hansa
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.22 $It must never for one moment be imagined that the Hansa was a democratic body, far fro it: the heads of the organization were the aristocracy of trade, they were all rich burghers, often merchant princes, who had traveled widely, and who, in addition to being astute business men, were men of brain and intelligence...

The Hansa: History and Culture
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.12 $Hansa - Hanseatic Town - Hansa Cog- are terms which are familiar to anyone interested in northern European History. The Hanseatic period has left behind many traces: -the towns with their churches, town halls and patrician houses, a unique architectural flavor, and the ruins of mighty defences, -the town seals, public documents and chronicles, -the cogs, those one-masted sailing ships with their typical profile, and all the sagas and songs about the trade they plied and the escapades of their pirates, -the paintings and sculptures scattered along the coastal regions of the North and Baltic Seas. Hanseatic history is a chapter, not only in the history of northern and central Germany, but in that of other countries in the regions around those tow seas; the records of a Hanseatic past which still inspire the admirations of today's observers testify to the outstanding cultural accomplishment of Hanseatic burghers. What kind of people built those impressive towns five and six centuries ago? What kind of life did they lead? How did they work and where did they live? Did they have access to education? How did trade and seafaring influence their occupations and their character? What role did church and religion play in their society? How was their mentality expresses in their literature, music and visual arts? And were they conscious of their own history? This book seeks to answer those questions in words and in pictures. It sketches in outline the emergence and evolution of this extraordinary historical phenomenon, its heyday and its demise, demonstrating the international operation and influence of the Hansa which, first as a company of merchants and then as a League of towns, encouraged the economic unity of the lands around the North Sea and the Baltic.

Child of a Hidden Sea
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.56 $One minute, twenty-four-year-old Sophie Hansa is in a San Francisco alley trying to save the life of the aunt she has never known. The next, she finds herself flung into the warm and salty waters of an unfamiliar world. Glowing moths fall to the waves around her, and the sleek bodies of unseen fish glide against her submerged ankles. The world is Stormwrack, a series of island nations with a variety of cultures and economies―and a language different from any Sophie has heard. Sophie doesn't know it yet, but she has just stepped into the middle of a political firestorm, and a conspiracy that could destroy a world she has just discovered...her world, where everyone seems to know who she is, and where she is forbidden to stay. But Sophie is stubborn, and smart, and refuses to be cast adrift by people who don't know her and yet wish her gone. With the help of a sister she has never known, and a ship captain who would rather she had never arrived, she must navigate the shoals of the highly charged politics of Stormwrack, and win the right to decide for herself whether she stays in this wondrous world...or is doomed to exile, in Child of a Hidden Sea by A.M. Dellamonica.

Metal Swarm (The Saga of Seven Suns)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.67 $In the aftermath of a devastating war, swarms of ancient black robots built by the lost insectoid Klikiss race continue their depredations on helpless worlds with stolen and heavily armed Earth battleships.Among the humans, the Hansa's brutal Chairman struggles to crush any resistance even as King Peter breaks away to form his own new Confederation among the colonies who have declared their independence. And meanwhile, the original, voracious Klikiss race, long thought to be extinct, has returned, intent on conquering their former worlds and willing to annihilate anyone in the way.Praise for the Saga of Seven Suns?"A soaring epic?a space opera to rival the best the field has ever seen."--- Science Fiction Chronicle"Kevin Anderson has created a fully independent and richly conceived venue for his personal brand of space opera, a venue that nonetheless raises fruitful resonances with Frank Herbert's classic Dune series."?Scifi.com

Beware Raiders! Edwards, Bernard
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.00 $This is the fascinating story of two German surface raiders and the havoc they caused amongst Allied shipping in World War II. One was the 8-inch gun cruiser Admiral Hipper, fast, powerful and Navy-manned: the other a converted merchant man, Hansa Line's Kandelfels armed with a few old 5.9s manned largely by reservists, and sailing under the nom de guerre of Pinguin. Contrary to all expectations, the amateur man-of-war reaped a rich harvest and went out in a blaze of glory. Her purpose-built sister, on the other hand, was hard-pressed even to make her mark on the war and ended her days in ignominy. The author emphasizes the striking contrast between the conduct of Ernst Kruder, captain of the Pinguin, whose concern it was to cause as little loss of life as possible, and the callous Captain Meisel of the Admiral Hipper, who has scant regard for the lives of the men whose ships he had sunk.Captain Edwards describes in detail Kruder's most audacious coup, the capture, rather than the sinking, of the entire Norwegian Antarctic whaling fleet, which he calls '"a disaster of major proportions". Equally disastrous was the havoc wreaked upon convoys HG53 and SLS 64 by the Admiral Hipper in the North Atlantic in February 1941.
