Jon Hassler was one of the most beloved writers to come out of Minnesota in the twentieth century. Here author Ed Block gives us the first book-length study of his life and work. Block begins with a biographical sketch recounting Hassler’s Catholic education, and goes on the describe his career as a teacher in a succession of towns in central Minnesota. The remaining chapters focus on the novels and short stories Hassler crafted from these experiences, from the various personal relationships he nurtured, sustained, and sometimes lost over time, and from his own fertile imagination. Hassler’s small-town roots and the sensitivity he developed as a teacher to the aspirations and frustrations of youth both contribute to his gently satiric but deeply humane renderings of middle American life. Backbiting and gossip, family break-ups, depression, addiction, the problems of aging, and other social issues figure prominently in his work, but, as Block amply demonstrates, they’re counterbalanced by Hassler’s lyrical celebration of nature and the everyday and his far from sentimental insights into the role played by friendship, love, loyalty, and self-respect in bringing meaning to people’s lives.

Captivated by watching the artist work, Hassler began working as Josephsohn’s assistant and apprentice once he had finished school, eventually becoming a sculptor himself. After taking up photography and filmmaking, he also began to capture countless images of Josephsohn’s sculptural work, as well as producing a short film, released in 1977. Produced in collaboration with the Kesselhaus Josephsohn, in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Hans Josephsohn Sculptures features more than one hundred of Hassler’s striking black-and-white photographs. Many of the photographs have a single sculpture as their focus, showcasing the singular expressiveness that characterized Josephsohn’s work. Others shed light on Josephsohn’s extraordinary life and artistic process. Rounding out the collection is an introduction by Ulrich Meinherz and an essay by Nina Keel that takes a closer look at the context of Hassler’s photographic studies of his teacher’s art.

Neuware - Der Fotograf und Filmer Jürg Hassler, geboren 1938, beschäftigte sich über Jahre hinweg intensiv mit dem bildhauerischen Werk von Hans Josephsohn (1920-2012). Als Jugendlicher führte ihn sein Schulweg täglich am Atelier des Künstlers in Zürich vorbei, was Hasslers Interesse für die Arbeit des Bildhauers weckte. Nach der Matura begann Hassler bei Josephsohn als Assistent zu arbeiten und dabei das Handwerk der Bildhauerei zu erlernen. Nach einem Studium der Fotografie in Vevey und paralleler eigener bildhauerischer Tätigkeit realisierte Hassler 1977 den Film «Josephsohn - Stein des Anstosses» und fotografierte während vielen Jahren häufig in Josephsohns Atelier.Dieses Buch zeigt eine Auswahl von Hasslers fast ausschliesslich in Schwarz-Weiss gemachten Aufnahmen, mehrheitlich mit einzelnen Skulpturen Josephsohns als Motiv, und es beleuchtet die Eigenheiten seiner Bildsprache. In seiner Einführung schreibt Ulrich Meinherz über das Auffinden von Hasslers Fotografien in Josephsohns Atelier ein Jahr nach dessen Tod. Und Nina Keels Essay beschreibt, in welchem Zusammenhang Hasslers Fotografien der Skulpturen entstanden sind.
