The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was without doubts one of the most important airplanes in the history of aviation and since the beginning its history was linked to Spain. Only a few months since the maiden flight, three prototypes were sent to Spain to be tested during the Spanish Civil War and shortly after Spain bought E and F series.When Spain acquired the manufacturing under license of the Bf 109 G-2 began the history of the Messerschmitt Bf 109s made in Spain, which gave rise to two aircraft such as the HA-1109 and the HA-1112, with several subtypes. He demonstrates that their unique intermixture with Pueblo Indians, nomad Indians, Anglos, and Mexican Americans, combined with isolation in their particular natural and cultural environments, have given them a unique sense of place - a sense of homeland. Several processes shaped and reshaped the Hispano Homeland. Initial colonization left the Hispanos relatively isolated from cultural changes in the rest of New Spain, and gradual intermarriage with Pueblo and nomad Indians gave them new cultural features. As their numbers increased in the eighteenth century, they began to expand their Stronghold outward from the original colonies.

Today everybody knows what a Rolls Royce is - a car of ultimate quality, reserved for the richest of the rich. Not everybody knows in the Thirties that there existed a French version high class car - the HISPANO SUIZA. The word means "SPAIN-SWITZERLAND", stemming from the two founder's nationality - namely J. Castro, the Spanish entrepreneur and the Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt. From the beginning all cars carried an emblem on the cooler incorporating the Spanish and Swiss Coat of Arms. 1904 Castro and Birkigt formed the company HISPANO SUIZA in Barcelona and produced cars of different sizes which won quickly the reputation of the experts and the nobility who purchased many of their products. It turned out, however, that the French market was much bigger for high class motorcars and consequently a factory was set up in France - near Paris. A turning point in the development of the company was the outbreak of World War I. Birkigt designed quickly a novel water cooled aircraft engine which outperformed subsequently all their competitors, particularly when it comes to endurance. The HISPANO SUIZA engine became a legend and the emblem of one of the most famous French pilots, Georges Guynemer - a flying stork - became the emblem of HISPANO SUIZA. After the war, Birkigt turned back to luxury cars again and created some of the most advanced cars of this time - all ordered individually by the richest of the time, produced fully hand crafted whereby the body of the car was always made by a coach-building company in accordance with the specifications of the customer. Consequently, there are no two identical cars of HISPANO SUIZA in the world. Rolls Royce took over some technical features from HISPANO SUIZA under a licence agreement but never reached the performance of HISPANO SUIZA. H-S was considered to be the top brand among all luxury cars and certainly the most expensive as well.

This volume recounts the little-known history of Hispano merchants in the Santa Fe trade during the nineteenth century. Contrary to ethnic stereotypes, Hispanos were ambitious, savvy businessmen who practiced the most modern methods of international finance. Their complex transactions linked Santa Fe with Chihuahua City, St. Louis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, New York, London, and Paris. New Mexican merchants like millionaire Felipe Chávez were major figures in the Santa Fe trade until the coming of the railroad in 1880. The practices of Chávez and his competitors convincingly demonstrate why they referred to themselves as "los capitalistas." In addition to maps illustrating the international network of the Santa Fe trade, five appendices present data of interest to historians and genealogists, including Mexican merchants who received commercial passports from the Santa Fe customs house, and census data from 1860 and 1870 on Hispano and non-Hispano merchants and freighters.
