Late Innings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.25 $This Excerpt was taken from the foreward: THIS BOOK IS ABOUT BASEBALL GAMES AND PLAYERS AND seasons that I watched from the spring of 1977 to the late summer of 1981, and also about the substrata of the sport---money, celebrity, power, traditions, and social change---that lie beneath its green and ordered fields. Most of the autumn chapters include a summary of the campaigns just past, but readers are advised not to take these as history. Many deserving ball teams and outstanding players have been slighted in these pages, because I did not see them play over an extended span of games, and other clubs and stars reappear so frequently as to suggest some bias at work. I admit to the charge. I am still a baseball fan as well as a baseball writer, and old fans like to retrace their steps; I like to be in Scottsdale and St. Petersburg in March, in Fenway Park in July (September there hurts too much), at Shea whenever the Mets appear to be breathing, and in Yankee Stadium or Chavez Ravine or walking over he bridge across the Allegheny to Three Rivers Stadium in October. I take sides during most games and through every summer, and although this disqualifies me as a Gibbon, it has probably kept me cheerful. As Bill Veeck always says, it's meant to be fun. Some readers may hear a somber, almost funereal murmur in this book's title. This is not intended, for although big-league baseball is long past its innocent youth and well into what appears to be a disordered and self-destructive sort of middle age, it is a flushed and vigorous reprobate, with astounding recuperative powers. I suggest two lighter alternative readings---"Late" as in the late news: the baseball news of recent years; or, perhaps better, the later, most absorbing innings of a good game, when we in the stands begin to understand its particular pace and patterns, and even to pick up some glimmering of its resolution.

Brittle Innings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.15 $In 1943, at the height of World War II, the Highbridge Hellbenders of the the class-C Chattahoochee Valley League deep in Georgia acquire a 17-year-old shortstop from Oklahoma named Danny Boles. The Hellbenders snap him up because he's too young for the draft and preternaturally talented. In Highbridge, they make him the boarding-house roommate of an enormous first baseman with the awe-inspiring skill of blasting monster home runs out of the CVL's tumbledown ballparks. Known to his teammates as Jumbo Hank Clerval, this mysterious giant and the mute Danny Boles strike up an improbable friendship that culminates at the hot season's end in triumph and disappointment, not to mention a host of haunting discoveries in both the simmering South and the wind-swept Aleutian Islands. Hailed by critics as a contender for the Great American Novel laurel, Brittle Innings evokes a bygone era of worldwide conflict and homeland unity. It also convincingly links documented wartime history with the immemorial mythology of the superhero and the legendary status of baseball as the unchallenged American pastime. If you read it, you will not forget it.

Nine Innings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.59 $You'll never watch baseball the same way again. A timeless baseball classic and a must read for any fan worthy of the name, Nine Innings dissects a single baseball game played in June 1982 -- inning by inning, play by play. Daniel Okrent, a seasoned writer and lifelong fan, chose as his subject a Milwaukee BrewersBaltimore Orioles matchup, though it could have been any game, because, as Okrent reveals, the essence of baseball, no matter where or when it's played, has been and will always be the same. In this particular moment of baseball history you will discover myriad aspects of the sport that are crucial to its nature but so often invisible to the fans -- the hidden language of catchers' signals, the physiology of pitching, the balance sheet of a club owner, the gait of a player stepping up to the plate. With the purity of heart and unwavering attention to detail that characterize our national pastime, Okrent goes straight to the core of the world's greatest game. You'll never watch baseball the same way again.

Final Innings: A Documentary History of Baseball, 1972-2008
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.00 $With Final Innings Dean Sullivan concludes his four-volume documentary history of baseball, whose three earlier volumes have been called “a broad array of illuminating and often unexpected materials” (Sports Collectors Digest), “an invaluable reference tool” (Newark Star-Ledger), and a “fascinating collection” (Washington Post), in which “ancient myths are shattered and new facts are uncovered” (USA Today Baseball Weekly). Culling the most pertinent, newsworthy, and just plain curious stories from newspapers and periodicals, and putting each into context, Sullivan constructs an informative and entertaining account of Major League baseball from 1972 through 2008. The 105 essays cover key topics such as George Steinbrenner’s purchase of the Yankees, the first free-agent draft, the coming of lights to Wrigley Field, the cancellation of the World Series in 1994, and the BALCO steroid probe. They also bring to light lesser-known gems like the rise of sabermetrics and the federal injunction against team owners in 1995. Offering a you-are-there view of the events that made baseball into the game we know today, this book gives readers a chance to go back and experience baseball’s recent history as it happened and was reported by many of the game’s finest writers and most prominent voices.
