Jacobites: A New History of the '45 Rebellion
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 93.46 $The dramatic story of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his quixotic attempt to regain the throne of England. The Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-46 is one of the most important turning points in British history. The tale of Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie," and his heroic attempt to regain his grandfather's (James II) crown--remains the stuff of legend: the hunted fugitive, Flora MacDonald, and the dramatic escape over the sea to the Isle of Skye. But the full story--the real history--is even more dramatic, captivating, and revelatory.Much more than a single rebellion, the events of 1745 were part of an ongoing civil war that threatened to destabilize the British nation and its empire. The Bonnie Prince and his army alone could not have posed a great threat. But with the involvement of Britain's perennial enemy, Catholic France, it was a far more dangerous and potentially catastrophic situation for the British crown. With encouragement and support from Louis XV, Charles’s triumphant Jacobite army advanced all the way to Derby, a mere 120 miles from London, before a series of missteps ultimately doomed the rebellion to crushing defeat and annihilation at Culloden in April 1746--the last battle ever fought on British soil.Jacqueline Riding conveys the full weight of these monumental years of English and Scottish history as the future course of Great Britain as a united nation was irreversibly altered.

Jacobites : Britain and Europe, 1688-1788
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.79 $The product of forty years of research by one of the foremost historians of Jacobitism, this book is a comprehensive revision of Professor Szechi’s popular 1994 survey of the Jacobite movement in the British Isles and Europe. Like the first edition, it is undergraduate-friendly, providing an enhanced chronology, a convenient introduction to the historiography and a narrative of the history of Jacobitism, alongside topics specifically designed to engage student interest. This includes Jacobitism as a uniting force among the pirates of the Caribbean and as a key element in sustaining Irish peasant resistance to English colonial rule. The Jacobite Rebellions 1689–1745 (Men-at-Arms)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.08 $Between the first Jacobite rising in 1689 and the final collapse of the cause in 1746, the hopes of the House of Stuart were centred chiefly on Scotland. It is often wrongly assumed that the Jacobite rebellions were a contest between England and Scotland. In fact many Lowland Scots share the feelings of the English, and had cause to hate and fear their fellow countrymen in the Highlands. Thus it was to the Highland clans that the Jacobites looked to for their most reliable manpower. In this book Michael Barthorp details the events of the Jacobite rebellions, and the organisation and uniforms of the forces of both sides.

The Jacobites and Their Drinking Glasses [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 145.00 $A belief in hereditary monarchy is, for the majority of the population in this country, something which is not questioned. A reading of history will, however, make us understand how the later Stuarts believed they had been cheated out of their inheritance. The fact that they were prepared to resort to armed rebellion in an attempt to regain what they believed was rightfully theirs is not difficult to appreciate. Supporters of their cause, the Jacobites, fell into two main camps, either those committed zealots who were prepared to risk all for the cause or the fireside club-goers who preferred to raise their richly engraved wine glasses to toast the "King over the water" rather than raise their swords. It is these same drinking glasses, with their stories to tell of those turbulent times, which are the subject of this book. Much has already been written about Jacobite history and the principal characters involved. This book examines and records the history of the glassware. As well as an outline of the historical background, the author discusses the secret Jacobite societies and the drinking glasses they used, allied to the whole subject of British glass in the 18th century. This Jacobite glassware is examined with the aid of the author's own photographs detailing almost 500 individual items. Explanations are provided of the many intricate designs and the rich symbolism etched upon the surfaces of these elegant works. This book should be useful reading for any student of 18th or 19th century British glass or anyone interested in the history of the period.

The Jacobite Relics of Scotland
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 180.12 $James Hogg's Jacobite Relics - originally commissioned by the Highland Society of London in 1817 - is an important addition to The Collected Works of James Hogg. It created a canon for the Jacobite song which had an enormous influence on subsequent collections, and was of great importance in defining the relationship between the Scottish song tradition and its Romantic editors and collectors. From the first publication of the Relics in 1819, there has been speculation about how many of them were authored or at least substantially altered by Hogg. Professor Murray Pittock has conducted extensive research in this area since 1987, and has identified several previously unknown sources from which Hogg would have worked as he developed his collection. The introduction to volume two deals with the genesis of the text and Hogg's relationship with the Highland Society and there is also considerable annotation to accurately communicate the context of the songs and Hogg's relationship to the textuality of Jaco
