Its strong points are the careful attention to ex­ planatory detail, the methodical coverage of all the maj or results and the straightforward, lucid style. Certainly it will be a val­ uable reference for one learning the subject or for one who re­ quires the details of the practical results. Of course modern quantum field theory has now grown far beyond its dramatic be­ ginnings in electrodynamics and we have therefore included some references to introduce the reader to the more recent and more specialized literature. We have corrected some minor errors: we would appreciate it if readers would inform us of any others which they find. We thank Professors Paul Urban and C. MtSller for permission to use the biographical material on Kallen. Daniel Greene traces the emergence of the idea of cultural pluralism to the lived experiences of a group of Jewish college students and public intellectuals, including the philosopher Horace M. Kallen. These young Jews faced particular challenges as they sought to integrate themselves into the American academy and literary world of the early 20th century. At Harvard University, they founded an influential student organization known as the Menorah Association in 1906 and later the Menorah Journal, which became a leading voice of Jewish public opinion in the 1920s. In response to the idea that the American melting pot would erase all cultural differences, the Menorah Association advocated a pluralist America that would accommodate a thriving Jewish culture while bringing Jewishness into mainstream American life.

This book traces the adventures of explorers Richard Bangs and Christian Kallen as they raft down rivers in North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia, selecting rivers with gradients that ensured white water. Along the way they combined physical challenge with anthropological and ecological investigation. Bangs and Kallen encountered hidden African tribes, observed Peruvian ceremonies revering the Inca and discovered for themselves that the Indus is still only partly navigable.
