The Archaeology and Pottery of Nazca, Peru : Alfred Kroeber's 1926 Expedition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $When Alfred Kroeber left Lima, Peru for the ruins of the Nazca region in July 1926, he could have had no inkling of the importance of what he would uncover. Nor would he have guessed that his excavation report would not appear until the end of the century, completed by Donald Collier and Patrick Carmichael after Kroeber's death in 1960. Kroeber's report contains what is still the only complete analysis and seriation of the beautiful painted pottery of Nazca, complete with over 400 photographs and drawings of objects uncovered in the excavations, some in full color. His report is also notable for its rare discussion of Nazca architecture, its description of cloth, hair bundles and other artifact groups, its accurate analysis of Nazca human remains, and even for one of the earliest descriptions and photographs of the famous Nazca lines. With careful editing by Collier and Carmichael, Kroeber's work is far ahead of its time methodologically and is still an important source document for contemporary archaeology and art history of South America. A final chapter by Katharina J. Schreiber puts Kroeber's work in the context of contemporary Nazca studies, including a reassessment of the sites discovered in the 1926 expedition. Important for both professional and avocational anthropologists, archaeologists, art historians, and those interested in the history of anthropology.Published in cooperation with The Field Museum, Chicago, Illinois

For more than forty years, Theodora Kroeber's biography has been sharing this tragic and absorbing drama with readers all over the world. This deluxe edition of the classic biography is embellished with pictures that help to bring the story to life. Many of the photographs were taken at the actual locations in the Deer Creek country of northern California where Ishi was born and lived for nearly half a century as a "wild" Indian. Also included are many contemporary photographs, nineteenth-century drawings, maps, and, of course, the thirty-two photographs that were included in the original edition.Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughterhouse near Oroville, California. Configurations of Culture Growth
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 77.89 $"This handsome volume, one of a group commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the University of California, caps the prolific and extraordinarily varied publications of the most distinguished of living American anthropologists.... In this book [Kroeber] demonstrates his control over amazing ranges of world history. Kroeber's versatility and intellectual robustness are all the more refreshing when viewed against the background of the narrowness and overspecialization, the relative isolation from the main currents of contemporary thought, and the inbred parochialism which have, on the whole, characterized twentieth-century anthropology. Configurations of Culture Growth deserves those abused adjectives 'great' and 'monumental.' " From: Clyde Kluckhohn 1946 review of "Configurations of Culture Growth."American Journal of Sociology, vol. 51, no. 4, p. 336-341.

Yurok Myths
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 109.39 $Between 1901 and 1907 Alfred Kroeber, then a young professor at the University of California, Berkeley, made numerous trips into the country o the Yurok Indians, along the far northern California coast and inland on the lower Klamath River. The Yurok and their neighbors, the Hupa and the Karok, were the southernmost sharers of the great Northwest Coast Civilization. Kroeber, concentrating on the austere culture of Yurok, sought material artifacts for the University museum and collected Yurok myths,- tales of woe times, when the mythological heroes peopled the earth: the "never-eating" Pulekukwerek, the philandering Wohpekemeu, the scheming Coyote. From their informants Kroeber collected over 150 myths and variants, transcribing some in the original tongue, many on phonograph cylinders for later translation, and most in English through an interpreter. Over the years, as time form teaching and other research permitted, Kroeber worked at editing and annotating the myths. His death intervened as he neared the end of his task. Now, to mark the centennial of Kroeber's birth, the complete collection is published for the first time. Following Kroeber's plan, the myths told by each Yurok informant are grouped together. Each group is preceded by Kroeber's biographical and psychological study of the informant, and each tale is accompanied by Kroeber's explanatory notes. The book is Kroeber's final tribute to the Yurok. As Theodora Kroeber says in her Foreward, "They were the first California Indians he came to know, and they were the people and culture who most engaged his curiosity and attention."

Arapaho
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.19 $First published in three parts in 1902, 1904, and 1907, The Arapaho quickly established itself as a model of description of Indian culture. Its discussion of Arapaho dance and design provides one of the most thorough studies of Indian symbolism ever written. Alfred L. Kroeber was sent in 1899 to study the Southern Arapaho in western Indian Territory (present Oklahoma). In 1900 he lived in the camp of the Northern Arapaho in Wyoming, and in 1901 he visited the Gros Ventre, a related tribe, in Montana. He researched his subject at first hand, speaking with Arapaho men and women of all ages about their customs, beliefs, and ceremonies. The Arapaho touches upon nearly every imaginable facet of the Indians' culture. Careful attention is paid to ceremonies, games, religion and stories of the supernatural, tribal organization, kinship, decorative art and regalia, and the articles of everyday life: clothes, pottery, utensils, tens, and the all-important pipe.

Traditions of the Arapaho (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.81 $Anthropologists George A. Dorsey and Alfred L. Kroeber joined forces to record and preserve the rich cultural traditions of the Arapaho Indians, long split into two bands. Dorsey had done fieldwork with the Southern Arapaho after they moved from Colorado to Oklahoma and would soon be known for his study of their Sun Dance. Kroeber had visited the Northern Arapaho, who were still living in Wyoming. Traditions of the Arapaho, first published in 1903, is the result of their collaboration. This collection of tales bears witness to the religious feeling, imagination, and humor of the Arapaho. Beginning with creation myths, Dorsey and Kroeber offer stories about Found-in-Grass, Blood-Clot-Boy, Badger-Woman, Blue-Feather, White Dog, the Rolling Stone, Porcupine, and the Woman Who Climbed to the Sky. Entities marvelous and mundane—water monsters, speckled horses, dancing ducks, cannibalistic dwarves—populate these vibrant tales, where spirit permeates everything, and everything has meaning.
