Germaine Krull (1897–1985) made a name for herself in avant-garde photography in the period between the two World Wars. After attending photography school in Munich, she launched her career in Berlin, and later worked in Paris and Monte Carlo. During World War II, her leftist political beliefs led her to spend time in Brazil and French Equatorial Africa, and afterward she traveled to Southeast Asia and later settled in Northern India. She was a remarkable artist who was a pioneer in her field, particularly in regard to the development of the photographic book and photojournalism. This exhibition catalogue reveals how Krull balanced her avant-garde, artistic vision and her active role in the media, highlighting more than 150 images produced between 1924 and 1945, some of which appeared in her monographic books and others of which were produced for commercial publication. Eli Lotar (1905-1969, b. Romania), was a French photographer, cinematographer and film-maker. A friend and associate of Germaine Krull and Andre Kertesz, Lotar published his photographs in reviews such as Vu, Jazz, VariŽtŽs, Bifur, and Minotaure. He participated in the 1929 Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart, and became part of the New Vision-orientated group loosely described as the 'Paris School'. His best known work is photographs of the slaughterhouses of La Villette. This catalogue was published in conjunction with the exhibition PICTURING ED: JERRY MCMILLAN'S PHOTOGRAPHS OF ED RUSCHA 1958-1972 at Craig Krull Gallery from May 22-June 26, 2004. The exhibition included forty-seven vintage photographic images of Edward Ruscha taken over the years by his good friend (and fellow Oklahoma City to L.A. transplant) Jerry McMillan. The catalogue is trimmed to the size of one of Ruscha's self published artist's books of the sixties and seventies and it contains an abundance of sweet & sexy pictures of Ed the artist, friend, husband, and dad.
