Am 30. Juni 1981 endete der grosste Strafprozess der deutschen Rechtsgeschichte – das Majdanek-Verfahren in Dusseldorf. Das im Herbst 1941 auf dem Majdanek-Hugel sudlich von Lublin errichtete Konzentrationslager Lublin-Majdanek war das erste Konzentrationslager, das die Alliierten befreiten. Als am 23. Juli 1944 sowjetische und polnische Soldaten das Lagergelande betraten, fanden sie Beweise fur einen Massenmord von bis dahin unvorstellbarem Ausmass vor. Noch im August 1944 wurde eine Kommission zur Untersuchung nationalsozialistischer Verbrechen eingerichtet. Ebenfalls noch im August erliess die polnische Ubergangsregierung das erste Gesetz zur Ahndung von NS-Verbrechen. Der erste KZ-Prozess fand schliesslich von 27. November bis 2. Dezember 1944 vor dem Sonderstrafgericht Lublin statt. Ein in Graz vorbereiteter osterreichischer Majdanek-Prozess fand hingegen nicht statt. Nach fast zehnjahrigen Ermittlungen gegen 64 Tatverdachtige beantragte die Staatsanwaltschaft Graz im Oktober 1972 die Einstellung des Verfahrens. Erst im Jahr 2007 sah sich die osterreichische Justiz veranlasst, die Mittaterschaft osterreichischer Verdachtiger an Verbrechen in Majdanek zu untersuchen. Doch auch hier scheiterte eine Anklageerhebung am Tod der Beschuldigten Erna Wallisch. In dem anlasslich des 30. Jahrestags des Urteils im Dusseldorfer Majdanek-Prozess erschienenen Buch wird unter anderem der Frage nachgegangen, in welchem Ausmass Staatsanwaltschaften und Gerichte in Osterreich, Deutschland und Polen dazu beigetragen haben, die Verbrechen im KZ Lublin-Majdanek aufzuklaren.

This book examines the Shoah in the Lublin District. Its analysis traces forced population movements and forced labor, constants in German policy, the bitter early memory of which influenced Jews later actions. Many hid or fled the deportations to death camps and forced labor, fearing an extreme return of the earlier experience, unable to grasp the Final Solution. Lublin was a contradictory district - few ghettos yet little survival.

In view of the twofold language of meaning, Karol Wojtyla was able to synthesize the traditional metaphysics of being with the contemporary axiology of human moral experience and behavior.

In The Paradox of Representation David Lublin offers an unprecedented analysis of a vast range of rigorous, empirical evidence that exposes the central paradox of racial representation: Racial redistricting remains vital to the election of African Americans and Latinos but makes Congress less likely to adopt policies favored by blacks. Lublin's evidence, together with policy recommendations for improving minority representation, will make observers of the political scene reconsider the avenues to fair representation. Using data on all representatives elected to Congress between 1972 and 1994, Lublin examines the link between the racial composition of a congressional district and its representative's race as well as ideology. The author confirms the view that specially drawn districts must exist to ensure the election of African Americans and Latinos. He also shows, however, that a relatively small number of minorities in a district can lead to the election of a representative attentive to their interests. When African Americans and Latinos make up 40 percent of a district, according to Lublin's findings, they have a strong liberalizing influence on representatives of both parties; when they make up 55 percent, the district is almost certain to elect a minority representative. Lublin notes that particularly in the South, the practice of concentrating minority populations into a small number of districts decreases the liberal influence in the remaining areas. Thus, a handful of minority representatives, almost invariably Democrats, win elections, but so do a greater number of conservative Republicans. The author proposes that establishing a balance between majority-minority districts and districts where the minority population would be slightly more dispersed, making up 40 percent of a total district, would allow more African Americans to exercise more influence over their representatives.

On March 9, 1942, the Jewish community of Mielec, Poland, ceased to exist. The Nazis dismantled the entire town in a single day, executing the elderly, deporting the able-bodied for slave labor, and transporting the rest to the Lublin district, where they were later murdered in Sobibor and Belzec. The Germans had taken over a Polish aircraft factory on the outskirts of Mielec, where they manufactured Heinkel 111 bomber planes for the Nazi war machine. Following the March 9, 1942, deportation, the factory complex became part of the Mielec Nazi slave labor camp, later a concentration camp.Using rare photographs and records, Nazi documents, witness statements, survivor interviews, and war criminal trial transcripts, Rochelle G. Saidel tells the story of the flourishing Mielec Jewish community, the unusual way it was wiped out by the Nazis, the few survivors who managed to run and hide, and the almost unknown brutal Mielec slave labor camp that operated from March 1942 until July 1944. Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) was a professor of anthropology and ethics at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland long before he was elected Pope. During this time, his interests centered around the concept of personhood and its many implications in the epistemological, metaphysical and ethical spheres. In this book, after considering the many philosophical and theological influences that helped to form his thought, his notion of personhood is discussed with reference to the status of unborn persons, that is of embryological and fetal life. His approach to personhood is then contrasted and compared with other contemporary notions in an effort to understand more clearly the status of life before birth.
