Lutyens and The Modern Movement
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.00 $In the exclusionary world of high modern architecture, it is curious to discover that two icons of the movement both admired the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens - an architect who had little or no interest in modernism. Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright created buildings that are very different, and the two men did not even like each other, but they shared a fascination for Lutyens' distinctively non-international style architecture. This polemical text is an account of why this occured. By exposing common aesthetic and structural themes in the architecture of these three giants, including the cities of New Delhi and Chandigahr, in India, the author explains why Wright and Le Corbusier may have had more in common with Lutyens than with many of their modern peers. The primary text in the book was written in 1967 and was published in a student journal in the U.S. with a small circulation. It has remained an underground classic since then - perhaps because its contents are so disruptive of our current views of 20th century modernism.

Lutyens and the Great War [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.00 $Sir Edwin Lutyens is celebrated for his large houses for wealthy clients, yet much of his work designed in connection with World War I remains unknown. As Chief Architect for the Imperial War Graves Commission, Lutyens’ work cemeteries, war memorials, and individual graves and monuments set the standard for the much-admired British and Commonwealth war cemeteries. In addition to the famed Cenotaph in Whitehall and the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme at Thiepval, Lutyens created another 55 memorials. This detailed guide covers them all, including the beautiful memorial at Spalding that has never appeared in any book on Lutyen’s work and the cemeteries at Monchy and Croisilles in France that barely rate a mention in battlefield guides, let alone in books about architecture. Tim Skelton and Gerald Gliddon of the Lutyens Trust describe these moving works and the stories behind them, while 375 color photographs capture their somber beauty.

Sir Edwin Lutyens: Designing in the English Tradition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 105.94 $This long-awaited book is the first to focus solely on the brilliant but often neglected interiors and furniture of the great British architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944). Lutyens's lifelong creative partnership with landscape designer Gertrude Jekyll spurred the revival of the English country garden, and his designs-rooted in the English Arts and Crafts movement but inspired by Classicism-remain popular today for their clean lines, angles, and contrasts. Published with the cooperation of the Lutyens family, and illustrated with specially commissioned and archival photographs of intact or restored interiors and gardens, original furniture designs, and contemporary reinterpretations of the Lutyens style, the book provides fresh insight into a design genius whose masterful synthesis of function and artistry has enduring relevance and appeal. ELIZABETH WILHIDE was born in the United States and has lived in England since the late 1960s. She is a leading expert on interior design who has written, co-authored, or contributed to dozens of books on the subject, including Abrams' William Morris: Decor & Design. CANDIA LUTYENS, who has contributed the foreword, is the great-niece of Sir Edwin Lutyens. She lives in England. 116 illustrations, 90 in full color, 9 x 10"
