Works of Arthur Machen : House of Souls, the Hill of Dreams, the Three Impostors and Other Tales of the Sacred and Profane
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.11 $Decadent, perverse and unreal, the strange stories of Arthur Machen uncover a lingering, ancestral horror, distantly remembered in the language of fairy tales, pagan lore, and in the secret old games that nurses teach to children. Deeply controversial in their own time, some of Machen’s stories had to wait decades to for changing social mores to permit their publication. This new collection by Lowood Press combines all of Machen’s most celebrated works in one volume. Herein are his greatest short stories, including The White People, The Great God Pan, The Bowmen and The Shining Pyramid; his semi-autobiographical novel, Hill of Dreams; and the original, complete version of The Three Impostors, with its interconnecting tales of occult intrigue. An unrivaled master of sacred terror and pioneer of the weird fiction genre, Machen’s work has directly influenced such notable horror writers as H. P. Lovecraft, Peter Straub, and Stephen King—but it has yet to be surpassed.

Arthur Machen
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 88.00 $Arthur Conan Doyle called Machen a genius; Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats and H.G. Wells admired him. His classic horror novel The Great God Pan, which both shocked and delighted contemporary readers with its dark portrayal of sexuality and its alluring villainess, has been favourably compared to Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde; his The Secret Glory changed John Betjeman's life; while his masterpiece The Hill of Dreams, located in his beloved Gwent, has been called the most beautiful book in the English language. It is a testimony to his writing skill that through one short story, The Bowmen, he once made thousands believe that angels had appeared at the Battle of Mons, sparking a whole series of myths.Largely neglected by critics and biographers, Machen has remained an inspiration to those readers who have sought him out, and current admirers include cellist Julian Lloyd Webber and TV personality Barry Humphries. Mark Valentine's biography, the first in many decades, provides a much needed re-examination of Machen's varied and fascinating career.

The House of Souls by Arthur Machen, Fiction, Classics, Literary, Horror
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.00 $From Machen's introduction: Several papers, I remember, declared that "The Great God Pan" was simply a stupid and incompetent rehash of Huysmans' "Là-Bas" and "À Rebours." I had not read these books so I got them both. Thereon, I perceived that my critics had not read them either.

J. Gresham Machen
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.00 $John Gresham Machen (1881 1937) was one of the most significant figures in the evangelical church throughout the twentieth century. He is best known through his vision for a truly evangelical presbyterian church in the USA, and as the founder of Westminster Theological Seminary, Pennsylvania. Gifted with an incisive mind which was finely tuned to the highest level of scholarship, he placed above all else his concern for Christ's gospel and the reliability of the Scriptures. For these he was prepared to suffer opposition, abuse, and even rejection. In the Philadelphia seminary, Machen gathered around him a team of men, including Cornelius Van Til, Paul Woolley, John Murray, and Ned Stonehouse, whose work took on international significance, and brought guidance to Christian scholarship and wisdom to the entire Christian church. Machen laid everything he possessed in tribute at the feet of Christ. He was, so to speak, a rich, young ruler in the church of God who sold all to follow his Master. He was deeply concerned to bring his warmhearted and accurate exposition of the gospel to the entire church. Such works of his as God Transcendent, The Christian View of Man, and An Introduction to the New Testament, have put many readers in his debt.

As other potters and assistants in the Los Angeles area begin to turn up dead, it becomes obvious that no one who knew or associated with Nicholas is safe. Calling into question everything she has ever known--her marriage, her friendships, her family, and the traditional values she has always accepted--she travels a road paved with greed, drugs, murderers, and villains.Filled with unexpected twists and turns, this novel is a must read for fans of mystery and intrigue.
