Only a God Can Save Us: Heidegger, Poetic Imagination and the Modern Malaise
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.74 $In the shadow of a looming global environmental catastrophe humanity is at an unprecedented crossroad where crucial and difficult decisions must be made about how we are to live. This book questions where the desire for certainty and mastery is taking us and argues that reliance on technology and information alone cannot avoid an ecological catastrophe. It attends to an existential poverty of spirit that, it suggests, is at the root of contemporary problems. It tackles the association between a metaphysical void, with its growing sense of meaninglessness, and the ecological predicament. While many find the consolations of traditional religion increasingly untenable, a hunger for a spiritual dimension in life persists. In a rare excursion, yet one which continues the uniquely human search for a transcendent ground of being, the book explores an unfamiliar kind of thinking which shelters and liberates the poetic imagination that counters the modern malaise. In a scholarly yet accessible account van Leeuwen uncovers from Martin Heidegger's middle/late philosophy an extraordinary pathway of transformative thinking where this imagination is nurtured.

The Resilient Female Body: Health and Malaise in Twentieth-Century France
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.52 $The chapters in this book were first presented at the Women in French Biennial Conference held in Leeds in May 2004. The twelve essays explore the multifaceted commodification of the female body and provide insights into the mutations of French society and culture. British and French scholars examine the paradoxes and contradictions embodied in various images and discourses related to health and illness from different perspectives, ranging from sociological studies to analyses of working diaries, children’s medical encyclopaedias and literary texts. The ‘resilient female body’ as epitomised by the First World War nurse tends by the end of the twentieth century to be construed as the ‘sanitised female body’, subjected to mind/body dualities largely controlled by the medical professions. Thus, maternity and related issues such as birth and contraceptive technologies figure as major themes with contributors revealing unresolved ambivalences. Other chapters focus on how women’s economic activity can affect their individual health and, potentially, that of others. A further prominent theme shows how, for contemporary women writers, serious illnesses such as cancer and madness in women can be seen as rich metaphors for the ills of a male-dominated society. Duras’s alcoholism and Aragon’s portrayals of prostitution are also discussed.

'What the Heck Are You Up To, Mr. President?': Jimmy Carter, America's "Malaise," and the Speech that Should Have Changed the Country
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.03 $In 1979, in an effort to right our national malaise, Jimmy Carter delivered a speech that risked his reputation and the future of the Democratic Party, changing the course of American politics for the next twenty-five years. At a critical moment in Jimmy Carter's presidency, he gave a speech that should have changed the country. Instead it led to his downfall and ushered in the rise of the conservative movement in America. In "What the Heck Are You Up To, Mr. President?" Kevin Mattson gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the weeks leading up to Carter's "malaise" speech, a period of great upheaval in the United States: the energy crisis had resulted in mile-long gas lines, inciting suburban riots and violence; the country's morale was low and Carter's ratings were even lower. The administration, wracked by its own crises, was in constant turmoil and conflict. What came of their great internal struggle, which Mattson conveys with the excitement of a political thriller, was a speech that deserves a place alongside L incoln's Gettysburg Address or FDR's First Inaugural. Prominent politicians on both sides of the aisle play important roles, including Carter, Vice President Walter Mondale, speechwriter Hendrik Hertzberg, Ronald Reagan, and Ted Kennedy. Like the best of narrative political writing, Mattson provides great insight into the workings of the Carter White House and the moral crisis that ushered in a new, conservative America.

Technics and Time, 3: Cinematic Time and the Question of Malaise (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.28 $In the first two volumes of Technics and Time, Bernard Stiegler worked carefully through Heidegger's and Husserl's relationship to technics and technology. Here, in volume three, he turns his attention to the prolematic relationship to technics he finds in Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, particularly in the two versions of the Transcendental Deduction. Stiegler relates this problematic to the "cinematic nature" of time, which precedes cinema itself but reaches an apotheosis in it as the exteriorization process of schema, through tertiary retentions and their mechanisms. The book focuses on the relationship between these themes and the "culture industry"― as defined by Adorno and Horkheimer―that has supplanted the educational institutions on which genuine cultural participation depends. This displacement, Stiegler says, has produced a malaise from which current global culture suffers. The result is potentially catastrophic.

Private Affluence, Public Austerity: Economic Crisis and Democratic Malaise in Canada
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.49 $Examining Canadian political and economic developments of the 21st century, this study analyzes the dynamics of Canadian politics in the era of neoliberal globalization. The survey contends that, although the last three decades of neoliberal rule are characterized by recurrent crises, the system has proven to be resilient even in the face of a severe recession. Canada’s striking business as usual” approach to the recent financial crisis is highlighted, arguing that it is failing to challenge the policies that are fundamental to the system and culpable for the crisis. Illustrating the legacy of the Canadian political system, this discussion encourages consideration of the relationship between neoliberalism and crisis as well as their role in democratic decline, prompting questions such as What is the legacy and the future of neoliberalism? and What role will Canada play in charting the course of that future? Offering an engaging exploration of the theories of contemporary capitalism, this investigation serves as a reminder that overcoming democratic malaise is a necessary first step on the path to change.
