Santa Marija Convoy: Faith & Endurance Format: Hardcover
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 104.26 $Malta is one of the smallest nations in the world, yet has one of the longest histories of any country. During World War II, Malta played a key role in the Mediterranean campaign, its submarines, light surface forces, and aircrafts destroying supplies desperately needed by Rommel's forces in North Africa. The price the Maltese paid for this effort was the most sustained and intensive bombing campaign in the war, enduring over 130 tons of bombs per square mile. This, compounded by the Axis blockade that attempted to starve Malta into surrender, set the stage for numerous convoy battles, the most dramatic being Operation Pedestal, in which over 40 British warships escorting 14 merchant ships to Malta. In The Santa Marija Convoy, Dennis Castillo uses published histories as well as interviews and oral histories to explore the experiences of the Maltese and how their faith sustained them through this dark period of Malta's history. Malta is an ancient Catholic culture, with roots going back to the founding of Christianity on the island by St. Paul. Their faith was sorely needed as they suffered both bombardment and hunger from June 1940 to August 1942. This faith was rewarded when, on August 15, 1942, The Feast of the Assumption, 5 out of 14 ships won through to Malta's harbor bringing crucial supplies for the island's survival. When the last and most important vessel of the convoy entered the port to the delirious applause of the starving population, they attributed the ship’s survival to the intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary and this event is remembered to this day as “The Santa Marija Convoy.”

Marija Vidovic Anmut - My Favorite Arias
Vendor: Deepdiscount.com Price: 29.99 $I am especially pleased to introduce to you a young singer, Marija Vidovic. In describing her voice, the words that come spontaneously to me are qualities like grace, sweetness and mellowness, and when it comes to her personality, I think of authenticity, charisma and above all elegance. All of those qualities amount to something special, something which anyone who loves music and the vocal art is always looking for but seldom finds: magic. I have often been witness to the spell she casts on he http://www.deepdiscount.com/pjx/4260123642259/?utm_source=PJX&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=Banner http://media.aent-m.com/graphics/items/sdimages/b/300/6/7/9/1/3011976.jpg http://media.aent-m.com/graphics/items/sdimages/b/50/6/7/9/1/3011976.jpg 18.99 18.12 1.99 Media > CD new 4260123642259 0.16000 Bellini / Vidovic / Baden Badener Philharmonie CD 1538095X Symphony No. 6 Conductor Daniel Harding's follow up to his first BR-Klassik CD (Schumann's Faust Scenes, BR-KLASSIK, 900122) is this 2014 live recording of Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony from Munich's Philharmonie I'm Gasteig. The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe: Myths and Cult Images
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.97 $In this beautifully illustrated study of sculpture, vases, and other cult objects portraying the Goddess, fertility images, and mythical animals, Marija Gimbutas sketches the matrilineal village culture that existed in southeastern Europe between 6500 and 3500 B.C., before it was overwhelmed by the patriarchal Indo-Europeans. The analysis of this rich mythical imagery tells us much about early humanity's concepts of the cosmos, of humans' relations with nature, and of the complementary roles of male and female.

The Living Goddesses
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.95 $The Living Goddesses crowns a lifetime of innovative, influential work by one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable scholars. Marija Gimbutas wrote and taught with rare clarity in her original―and originally shocking―interpretation of prehistoric European civilization. Gimbutas flew in the face of contemporary archaeology when she reconstructed goddess-centered cultures that predated historic patriarchal cultures by many thousands of years. This volume, which was close to completion at the time of her death, contains the distillation of her studies, combined with new discoveries, insights, and analysis. Editor Miriam Robbins Dexter has added introductory and concluding remarks, summaries, and annotations. The first part of the book is an accessible, beautifully illustrated summation of all Gimbutas's earlier work on "Old European" religion, together with her ideas on the roles of males and females in ancient matrilineal cultures. The second part of the book brings her knowledge to bear on what we know of the goddesses today―those who, in many places and in many forms, live on.

Wide Eyes: A War Orphan Unlocks the Mystery of Her Latvian Roots after Seventy Years (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $Nazi soldiers seized the baby Marija and her mother, Solomeja, on March 13, 1944 as reprisal for the father Broņislavs Platačs' partisan activities in Latgale, Latvia. Soldiers took mother and child as political prisoners to Rēzekne Prison and Salaspils concentration camp. Solomeja was sent to German concentration camps; Marija was taken to orphanages in Latvia and Germany. In 1949 Marija was flown to America, adopted by American parents, and became a US citizen. For 70 years her origins were unknown to her due to the Soviet occupation of her native Latvia. A “family detective” in Riga unlocked the story about her parents in 2014, enabling Marija to be reunited with the one surviving member of her father’s family, Broņislavs' sister, Leonora. The discovery process opened Marija’s eyes to her identity, true to her family name Platačs, which means wide eyes.

The Civilization of the Goddess: The World of Old Europe
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 132.94 $Marija Gimbutas presents a carefully researched, compelling and detailed composite portrait of the pre-Indo-European culture existing for 5,000 years up until about 5,000 years ago. Her greatest contribution is her willingness to NOT assume that things then must have been pretty much like they are now. That is, she explores with a much more open mind than most, what do the artifacts and patterns of housing and so on, tell us about that society? or, more accurately, that set of societies that prospered, growing larger, more creative and artistic, and more complex, over almost all of central and western Europe during that period of time? Marija illustrates beyond doubt that these societies were anything but "like" ours today, or even like the set of societies that conquered and replaced them for the next 5,000 years. The earlier social structures were centered on an understanding of the cycle of life: their villages were built with streets along concentric circles; their burials were in circular graves, their temples and worship were focused on the life giving aspect of the Goddess (her book includes photographs of hundreds of such artifacts), and in all of their thousands and thousands of pictures and artifacts, none -- not one -- were of war, fighting, or domination. Rather than a "Matriarchal" society where women dominate, Marija found a pattern of valuing women as were valued men, with villages of robust size -- 10,000 residents -- along trade routes. These societies fell easy prey to the domination of patriarchal and linear God-worshipping warriors on horseback that came out of what is now southern Russia around 5,000 years ago. Yet it took a few thousand of those years for nearly all the circular meaning of the growing of life to be pushed out. Interestingly, one might consider today's contemporary concern with sustainability to be a resurgence of that earlier understanding of the circular eternality of life /THI IS A GIFT QUALITY BOOK/
