Marsupial Nutrition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.06 $Marsupial Nutrition describes the food resources used by marsupials from small insectivores to large folivores. It discusses the ways in which these animals' digestive systems and metabolism are designed to cope with foods as different as nectar and fungus, tree sap and tough perennial grasses, and insects and eucalypt foliage. Although the subject species are marsupials, the general principles of nutritional ecology and digestive strategies that are introduced at the beginning of the chapters are applicable to all mammals. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students in the areas of vertebrate zoology, nutrition, ecology, and digestive physiology will find Marsupial Nutrition particularly instructive, and wildlife biologists, veterinarians, and nutritionists will also find much of interest.

Life of Marsupials
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 182.27 $Joint winner of the 2005 Whitley Medal. Included in Choice Magazine's 2006 Outstanding Academic Titles list. Over the past half a century research has revealed that marsupials – far from being ‘second class’ mammals – have adaptations for particular ways of life quite equal to their placental counterparts. Despite long separate evolution, there are extraordinary similarities in which marsupials have solved the challenges of living in such environments as deserts, alpine snowfields or tropical rainforests. Some can live on grass, some on pollen and others on leaves; some can glide, some can swim and others hop with extraordinary efficiency. In Life of Marsupials, one of the world’s leading experts explores the biology and evolution of this unusual group – with their extraordinary diversity of forms around the world – in Australia, New Guinea and South America. FeaturesWritten by a leading expert on marsupial biology Covers all marsupials in Australia, New Guinea and South America Colour photos of 39 species

A Fragile Balance: The Extraordinary Story of Australian Marsupials
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 174.08 $Marsupials are nearly synonymous with Australia. Although one of these enigmatic pouched mammals—the opossum—inhabits the United States and another 80 or so thrive in South America, some 220 species are confined to the Australasian region. In Australia, marsupials are the most diverse and dominant indigenous species, from the wallaby and the wombat to the kangaroo and koala. The extraordinary story of these fascinating animals, A Fragile Balance provides the most up-to-date information on marsupials without losing sight of the unique set of circumstances that led them to prevalence Down Under. Covering all marsupial species in Australia, the book uses an evolutionary framework to interpret the marsupial’s biological traits. Each species account includes a basic biological description, a range map, and a measure of conservation status. The accounts are bounded by general chapters on biology, natural history, cultural history, and conservation. A Fragile Balance is the first book to emphasize interactions between and among marsupials, as well as between humans and marsupials. Combining the expertise of renowned biologist Christopher Dickman with the artistic talents of illustrator Rosemary Woodford Ganf, A Fragile Balance will be a much celebrated reference for mammalogists worldwide, as well as for readers interested in Australian natural and cultural history.

Kangaroos: Biology of the Largest Marsupials (Comstock/Cornell Paperbacks)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.95 $Kangaroos may be the strangest of mammals - not so much because they keep their babies in pouches and lok like a cross between a giant rat and a deer - but because they alone among the large vertebrates can hop. This appealing natural history by an internationally known expert is the only up-to-date book on these unique animals. Illustrating his account with color photos and black-and-white drawings, Terence J. Dawson makes recent research on the biology, locomotion, behavior, and ecology of large kangaroos accessible to readers from tourists to specialists. The six species and four subspecies of red and gray kangaroos occupy habitats across most of Australia, and are distinguished mainly by size from their smaller relatives the wallabies. The largest marsupials, kangaroos belong to the Superfamily Macropodoidae, or "big foots", and are further characterized by complex stomachs and specialized teeth for grazing.Dawson considers the evolution of kangaroos, as well as their energetics, grazing habits, and classification. For each species, he details social organization, habitat, patterns of activity, population structure, reproductive biology and bheavior, feeding characteristics, and environmental physiology. The author documents as well the uneven history of coexistence between kangaroos and their human neighbors - both aboriginal and European. In addition to comparing cultural attitudes towards kangaroos, he explores such issues as hunting habits, conservation efforts, the problem of kangaroos as agricultural pests, and the economics of kangaroo ranching.Terence J. Dawson is Professor of Zoology at the School of Biological Science, University of New South Wales, Sydney.

Wombats [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 75.00 $Of all Australian marsupials, the wombat remains the most enigmatic. The first living specimen was collected from Francis Island in Bass Strait and presented to Governor Hunter in 1797. Wombats were kept at Regents Park Zoo in London in the mid-nineteenth century and indeed bred for the first time in captivity there in 1856. The first attempts at in-depth studies of wombats in the wild did not begin until the 1970s, more than 170 years since the first discovery by Europeans. The listing of the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat in 1972 as one of the World's most endangered mammals was a catalyst for renewed research interest and funding. This interest was kindled at a time when new technologies in telemetry, biochemistry and genetics enabled researchers to pose questions on aspects of the biology of wombats that were unanswerable 20 years before. In September 1994 the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia, sensing the time was right, sponsored the first conference devoted to the biology of the wombat. It brought together those with a common interest in these quintessential Australian marsupials: scientists, artists, writers and natural historians. Papers presented at that conference were the catalyst for this book. Since that time additional works have been solicited to round out the account while a number of entertaining and scholarly contributions that did not fit easily within the format of the Surrey Beatty series on Australian marsupials have been omitted. However, in the spirit of the conference and scientific debate the editors have allowed for the expression of divergent views. Nonetheless, no volume could do justice to the wonderful art, sculpture and literary works that did so much to enrich that scientific conference dealing with wombats and their ways.

The Koala of Death (Gunn Zoo Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 78.27 $When zookeeper Theodora "Teddy" Bentley fishes the body of Koala Kate out of Gunn Landing Harbor, she discovers that her fellow zookeeper didn't drown; she was strangled. The clues to Kate's killer implicate other animal keepers at Gunn Zoo, including Outback Bill, marsupial keeper and Kate's Aussie ex-boyfriend; and Robin Chase, the big cat keeper who's got it in for Teddy. Also displaying suspicious behavior are several "liveaboarders" at the harbor; Speaks-To-Souls, a shady "animal psychic;" and even Caro, Teddy's much-married, ex-beauty queen mother. But murderers aren't all Teddy has to worry about. Her embezzling father is still on the run from the Feds, and the motor on her houseboat is failing. To pay for the repairs, Teddy agrees to appear on a weekly live television broadcast featuring misbehaving animals that range from a cuddly koala to a panicky wallaby - and all hell breaks loose in the TV studio. All the while, the killer is narrowing in on Teddy....
