Martyrdom and the Politics of Religion
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.19 $By examining the ways that Catholic activists responded to political violence in El Salvador during the 1970s and 1980s, this book documents the beliefs and history of an important religious community, and explores the nature of religion's role in political ideology and mobilization.Martyrdom and the Politics of Religion explores the ways that Salvadoran Catholics sought to make sense of political violence in their country in the 1970s and 1980s by constructing a theological ethics that could both explain repression in religious terms and propose specific responses to violence. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, the book highlights the ways that progressive Catholicism offered a justification and tools for political resistance in the face of extraordinary destruction. Using the case of Catholicism in El Salvador, the book explores the nature of religious responses to social crisis and the ways that ordinary believers construct and strive to live by ethical systems. By highlighting the importance of theological belief, of narrative, and of religious rationality in political mobilization, it touches questions of general interest to readers concerned with the social role of religion and ethics.

Martyrdom and Rome (The Wiles Lectures)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.59 $This book examines the historical context of the earliest Christian martyrs, and anchors their grisly and often willful self-sacrifice to the everyday life and outlook of the cities (mostly Greek) of the Roman empire. By exploring the remains of contemporary documents of martyrdoms in the centuries before Constantine, it provides a historical explanation of why martyrdom occurred when and as it did, and thereby tries to expose the fundamental assumptions of a radical new form of religious and political dissidence that has been a powerful influence down to our own times.

The Martyrdom and History of Blessed Simeon bar Sabba'e (Persian Martyr Acts in Syriac: Text and Translation)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.62 $On Good Friday, sometime between 339-344 C.E., the bishop of Seleucia-Ctesiphon on the River Tigris was beheaded by the executioners of King Shapur II. The death of the bishop, Blessed Simeon bar Sabba'e, marked the official beginning of Shapur's 'Great Persecution' of the Christians of Persia, a forty-year period of oppression that continued until the king's death in 379. Of the dozens of texts included in the Acts of the Persian Martyrs, over half are set during the time of Shapur II and many make reference to Simeon, the first one to excel in the land of the East as a blessed martyr of God. According to his acts, Simeon was killed not only because he was a rebel who refused to collect a double tax levied on the Christians of Persia, but also because he would not bow either before King Shapur or the Zoroastrian sun god. As a result, Simeon was accused of being furtively allied with the Christian king of the Roman Empire and of inciting the Christians of Persia to rise up in rebellion.Though the Syriac texts of the Martyrdom and the History were edited in the early 20th century, this is the first time that either of the two versions of Simeon's acts the Martyrdom, and the longer and later History of Simeon bar Sabba'e have been translated into English.

The volume's authors―experts in the disciplines of psychology, theology, and politics―examine martyrdom in thoughtful and thought-provoking chapters. A closing conversation between the authors is designed to inspire further discourse and debate.Readers engaged in the exploration of social justice, conflict, psychology, religion, and the politics of memory will find this book unique and stimulating. Martyrdom and Noble Death (Paperback) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.66 $This volume explores the fascinating phenomenon of noble death through pagan, Jewish and Christian sources. Today's society is uncomfortable with death, and willingly submitting to a violent and ostentatious death in public is seen as particularly shocking and unusual. Yet classical sources give a different view, with public self-sacrifice often being applauded. The Romans admired a heroic end in the battlefield or the arena, suicide in the tradition of Socrates was something laudable, and Christians and Jews alike faithfully commemorated their heroes who died during religious persecutions. The cross-cultural approach and wide chronological range of this study make it valuable for students and scholars of ancient history, religion and literature.

Martyrdom And Ecstasy: Emotion Training In Iranian Culture
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.31 $The book is concerned with one of the most important issues in Persian culture, that is to say a broadly conceived idea of sacrifice and martyrdom. At present, it is contained in the concept of shahadat, which arouses much controversy in the Western world today. In successive chapters, the author discusses the origin and evolution of this concept in Persian culture, the process of shaping attitudes conducive to the attainment of readiness for shahadat and the role of this concept in propaganda, as well as presenting its modern-day interpretation. The basic research material was provided by political and religious publications of contemporary Iranian authors, including Ali Shari ati, Morteza Motahhari, Ruhollah Khomeini and Abdolkarim Soroush, who have exerted a significant influence on the formation of the Iranian consciousness. The book is an interdisciplinary publication. The author refers to philology, literary studies, cultural anthropology, social psychology, and, interestingly, to the psychology of emotions in order to explicate the traditional Persian system of upbringing and shaping the readiness for martyrdom and sacrifice. The book shows the idea of shahadat as part of the Persian cultural paradigm, which, due to religious and literary tradition, has influenced the shaping of Iranian identity over the centuries and, as a result, it has affected social and political attitudes of the Iranian people. The book is mainly directed to Iranologists. Nevertheless, it will also be of interest to anthropologists, psychologists of culture, sociologists and philosophers due to its interdisciplinary character.

The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535?1603 (St Andrews Studies in Reformation History)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 194.11 $Between 1535 and 1603, more than 200 English Catholics were executed by the State for treason. Drawing on an extraordinary range of contemporary sources, Anne Dillon examines the ways in which these executions were transformed into acts of martyrdom. Utilizing the reports from the gallows, the Catholic community in England and in exile created a wide range of manuscripts and texts in which they employed the concept of martyrdom for propaganda purposes in continental Europe and for shaping Catholic identity and encouraging recusancy at home. Particularly potent was the derivation of images from these texts which provided visual means of conveying the symbol of the martyr. Through an examination of the work of Richard Verstegan and the martyr murals of the English College in Rome, the book explores the influence of these images on the Counter Reformation Church, the Jesuits, and the political intentions of English Catholics in exile and those of their hosts. The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535-1603 shows how Verstegan used the English martyrs in his Theatrum crudelitatum of 1587 to rally support from Catholics on the Continent for a Spanish invasion of England to overthrow Elizabeth I and her government. The English martyr was, Anne Dillon argues, as much a construction of international, political rhetoric as it was of English religious and political debate; an international Catholic banner around which Catholic European powers were urged to rally.

Suffering, Martyrdom, and Rewards in Heaven
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.59 $The first systematic study of suffering, martyrdom, and rewards in heaven, this book offers a comprehensive survey of these ideas through biblical and historical investigation from the time of the writing of the book of Job to the present. Suffering and martyrdom for the faith are always accompanied in the biblical literature with the promise of great rewards in heaven. However, the Christian theology has never presented a comprehsensive treatment of this subject. For the Protestant ideology especially, it was always difficult if not impossible to integrate logically the concept of rewards into a system of grace and faith alone. This book, for the first time, presents a biblical and reasonable interpretation of the rewards in heaven and advocates close attention to God's original purpose for the creation of man as explanation for the complex issue of suffering and martyrdom.
