On Good Friday, sometime between 339-344 C.E., the bishop of Seleucia-Ctesiphon on the River Tigris was beheaded by the executioners of King Shapur II. The death of the bishop, Blessed Simeon bar Sabba'e, marked the official beginning of Shapur's 'Great Persecution' of the Christians of Persia, a forty-year period of oppression that continued until the king's death in 379. Of the dozens of texts included in the Acts of the Persian Martyrs, over half are set during the time of Shapur II and many make reference to Simeon, the first one to excel in the land of the East as a blessed martyr of God. According to his acts, Simeon was killed not only because he was a rebel who refused to collect a double tax levied on the Christians of Persia, but also because he would not bow either before King Shapur or the Zoroastrian sun god. As a result, Simeon was accused of being furtively allied with the Christian king of the Roman Empire and of inciting the Christians of Persia to rise up in rebellion.Though the Syriac texts of the Martyrdom and the History were edited in the early 20th century, this is the first time that either of the two versions of Simeon's acts the Martyrdom, and the longer and later History of Simeon bar Sabba'e have been translated into English.

This volume explores the fascinating phenomenon of noble death through pagan, Jewish and Christian sources. Today's society is uncomfortable with death, and willingly submitting to a violent and ostentatious death in public is seen as particularly shocking and unusual. Yet classical sources give a different view, with public self-sacrifice often being applauded. The Romans admired a heroic end in the battlefield or the arena, suicide in the tradition of Socrates was something laudable, and Christians and Jews alike faithfully commemorated their heroes who died during religious persecutions. The cross-cultural approach and wide chronological range of this study make it valuable for students and scholars of ancient history, religion and literature.

The book is concerned with one of the most important issues in Persian culture, that is to say a broadly conceived idea of sacrifice and martyrdom. At present, it is contained in the concept of shahadat, which arouses much controversy in the Western world today. In successive chapters, the author discusses the origin and evolution of this concept in Persian culture, the process of shaping attitudes conducive to the attainment of readiness for shahadat and the role of this concept in propaganda, as well as presenting its modern-day interpretation. Particularly potent was the derivation of images from these texts which provided visual means of conveying the symbol of the martyr. Through an examination of the work of Richard Verstegan and the martyr murals of the English College in Rome, the book explores the influence of these images on the Counter Reformation Church, the Jesuits, and the political intentions of English Catholics in exile and those of their hosts. The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535-1603 shows how Verstegan used the English martyrs in his Theatrum crudelitatum of 1587 to rally support from Catholics on the Continent for a Spanish invasion of England to overthrow Elizabeth I and her government. The English martyr was, Anne Dillon argues, as much a construction of international, political rhetoric as it was of English religious and political debate; an international Catholic banner around which Catholic European powers were urged to rally.

Suffering and martyrdom for the faith are always accompanied in the biblical literature with the promise of great rewards in heaven. However, the Christian theology has never presented a comprehsensive treatment of this subject. For the Protestant ideology especially, it was always difficult if not impossible to integrate logically the concept of rewards into a system of grace and faith alone.
