The Mathematical Career of Pierre de Fermat, 1601-1665: Second Edition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.71 $Hailed as one of the greatest mathematical results of the twentieth century, the recent proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles brought to public attention the enigmatic problem-solver Pierre de Fermat, who centuries ago stated his famous conjecture in a margin of a book, writing that he did not have enough room to show his "truly marvelous demonstration." Along with formulating this proposition--xn+yn=zn has no rational solution for n > 2--Fermat, an inventor of analytic geometry, also laid the foundations of differential and integral calculus, established, together with Pascal, the conceptual guidelines of the theory of probability, and created modern number theory. In one of the first full-length investigations of Fermat's life and work, Michael Sean Mahoney provides rare insight into the mathematical genius of a hobbyist who never sought to publish his work, yet who ranked with his contemporaries Pascal and Descartes in shaping the course of modern mathematics.

Mathematical Manuscript
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.54 $Karl Marx conducted his mathematical studies and investigations from around early 1850s till his death. These studies became more and more intensive during the 1870s and 1880s. Friedrich Engels first spoke of the importance of Marx's mathematical investigations in his grave-side speech in memory of Karl Marx delivered on 17 March 1883. He then indicated the existence of Marx's mathematical manuscripts and his desire to publish them in his Preface to the second edition of Anti-Dhring, in 1885. The present second revised edition of the first complete English translation (Calcutta: Viswakos, 1994) of the bilingual - Original Language (mainly German)-Russian - edition K. Marks, Matematicheskie Rukopisi [K. Marx, Mathematical Manuscripts] (Moskva: Nauka, 1968) contains various types of texts. These include Marx's completed and incomplete manuscripts devoted to describing and analysing the nature and history of differentiation of analytical functions up to the time of Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), the history of differential calculus up to that period, and the theorems of Taylor and MacLaurin; his notes and excerpts on the history of mathematics, commercial arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, conic sections, and differential calculus. The mathematical manuscripts of Marx are slated to be published in the original languages as Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA2), Volumes I/28 and IV/30.

Mathematical Modeling and Computation in Finance: With Exercises and Python and MATLAB Computer Codes
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 101.34 $This book discusses the interplay of stochastics (applied probability theory) and numerical analysis in the field of quantitative finance. The stochastic models, numerical valuation techniques, computational aspects, financial products, and risk management applications presented will enable readers to progress in the challenging field of computational finance. When the behavior of financial market participants changes, the corresponding stochastic mathematical models describing the prices may also change. Financial regulation may play a role in such changes too. The book thus presents several models for stock prices, interest rates as well as foreign-exchange rates, with increasing complexity across the chapters. As is said in the industry, "do not fall in love with your favorite model." The book covers equity models before moving to short-rate and other interest rate models. We cast these models for interest rate into the Heath-Jarrow-Morton framework, show relations between the different models, and explain a few interest rate products and their pricing. The chapters are accompanied by exercises. Students can access solutions to selected exercises, while complete solutions are made available to instructors. The MATLAB and Python computer codes used for most tables and figures in the book are made available for both print and e-book users. This book will be useful for people working in the financial industry, for those aiming to work there one day, and for anyone interested in quantitative finance. The topics that are discussed are relevant for MSc and PhD students, academic researchers, and for quants in the financial industry. Readership: MSc and PhD students of quantitative finance, academic researchers, and quants in the financial industry.

Mathematical Techniques for Biology and Medicine (MIT Press Classics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.48 $For many years statistics has been regarded as the essential mathematical preparation for biologists. Recently, however, it has become necessary to broaden this background to include advanced techniques such as linear differential equations. The difficulty with this has been that most courses in differential equations are designed for engineering students. This book is designed for biologists. It was developed in a graduate course at the University of Rochester School of Medicine but the approach is such that it will be useful at either the undergraduates or the graduate level. The only prerequisite is elementary calculus, and the assumption is that the student has probably forgotten much of what he learned in that course. The book begins with a review of the concepts of elementary calculus and shows how physiological problems can be formulated in terms of differential equations. It then proceeds quickly but in an entirely self-contained way to develop three techniques for the solution of differential equations: solution by Laplace transform, solution by inspection of the physical problem, and numerical solutions. These are applied to the types of problems most often encountered in physiology: compartmental problems, regulations, diffusion, flow measurements, and curve fitting. The terminology used in the problems and examples will be familiar to biologists. In each chapter the problems range from routine to fairly difficult. The first edition of this book was published in hardcover in 1972 with the title Mathematical Techniques for Physiology and Medicine. This revised contains a new chapter, on tracer experiments, and two additional appendixes. Many new problems (and their solutions) have also been added.

Mathematical Methods of Statistics. (PMS-9)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.84 $In this classic of statistical mathematical theory, Harald Cramér joins the two major lines of development in the field: while British and American statisticians were developing the science of statistical inference, French and Russian probabilitists transformed the classical calculus of probability into a rigorous and pure mathematical theory. The result of Cramér's work is a masterly exposition of the mathematical methods of modern statistics that set the standard that others have since sought to follow. For anyone with a working knowledge of undergraduate mathematics the book is self contained. The first part is an introduction to the fundamental concept of a distribution and of integration with respect to a distribution. The second part contains the general theory of random variables and probability distributions while the third is devoted to the theory of sampling, statistical estimation, and tests of significance.

Mathematical Circles: Russian Experience (Mathematical World, Vol. 7)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.33 $"This is a sample of rich Russian mathematical culture written by professional mathematicians with great experience in working with high school students ... Problems are on very simple levels, but building to more complex and advanced work ... [contains] solutions to almost all problems; methodological notes for the teacher ... developed for a peculiarly Russian institution (the mathematical circle), but easily adapted to American teachers' needs, both inside and outside the classroom." --from the Translator's notes What kind of book is this? It is a book produced by a remarkable cultural circumstance in the former Soviet Union which fostered the creation of groups of students, teachers, and mathematicians called "mathematical circles". The work is predicated on the idea that studying mathematics can generate the same enthusiasm as playing a team sport--without necessarily being competitive. This book is intended for both students and teachers who love mathematics and want to study its various branches beyond the limits of school curriculum. It is also a book of mathematical recreations and, at the same time, a book containing vast theoretical and problem material in main areas of what authors consider to be "extracurricular mathematics". The book is based on a unique experience gained by several generations of Russian educators and scholars.

Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.98 $Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics was a revolutionary book that caused a sea change in theoretical physics. Here, John von Neumann, one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century, shows that great insights in quantum physics can be obtained by exploring the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics. He begins by presenting the theory of Hermitean operators and Hilbert spaces. These provide the framework for transformation theory, which von Neumann regards as the definitive form of quantum mechanics. Using this theory, he attacks with mathematical rigor some of the general problems of quantum theory, such as quantum statistical mechanics as well as measurement processes. Regarded as a tour de force at the time of publication, this book is still indispensable for those interested in the fundamental issues of quantum mechanics.
