Das Verhältnis der Mathesis universalis zur Logik als Wissenschaftstheorie liegt der gesamten Philosophie Husserls zugrunde. Um dieses Verhältnis zu erläutern, greift der Verfasser vor allem auf die Leibnizsche Idee der Mathesis universalis und Scientia universalis zurück. Dabei stellt er außer den zwei Richtungen der modernen Logik, die von Leibniz beeinflußt wurden, nämlich der algebraischen Logik Booles einerseits und dem Logizismus Freges andererseits, als dritte Richtung die Philosophie der Logik Husserls dar. Diese drei Richtungen unterscheidet der Verfasser mit Hilfe der Leibnizschen Konzeptionen der Mathesis universalis: Calculus ratiocinator, Characteristica universalis und Ars Combinatoria.
