The Whirling Dervishes: Being an Account of the Sufi Order Known As the Mevlevis and Its Founder the Poet and Mystic Mevlana Jalalu'Ddin Rumi (Suny)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 87.64 $Sufism is the esoteric aspect of Islam. Its purpose is to convey direct knowledge of the eternal. The Sufis impart knowledge through lineages that go back to the Prophet Muhammud. In these various Sufi orders, the zikr, the repetition of "la illaha illa'llah" (There is no God but God), is part of initiation ceremonies. In fact, the method of the Sufis is zikr, and the manner in which zikr is performed is the essential difference among the various orders. The Dervishes repeat their zikr as they turn. They empty their hearts of all but the thought of God and whirl in the ecstatic movements of His breath.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.12 $This is a book on Rumi’s life, his poetry, his thought, and his influence. Transformed by this light, consumed by this fire, Mowlana Rumi saw the world in a new light. Everywhere he perceived God’s Grandeur and his Grace. The book also discusses the theological premises upon which Rumi’s work rests, his attitude to the problems of free will and predestination, and his analysis of the mystical stages and stations. The book not only gives a very rich analysis of Rumi’s language and poetical art, but also a picture of medieval Konya, whose features the mystical poet transforms and transfigures.

Hidden in Plain Sight (Hardcover)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 73.34 $Hardcover. The book is an examination of the apocryphal text known as Book Seven of the Mathnawi, attributed to Rumi, which has never before been studied. Why was this text was added to Rumis Mathnawi? What were its implications in the Mevlevi centers in 17th-century Ottoman society or in Persian speaking societies in India and Iran? The author has located and analyzed different manuscript versions of the text, discusses possible authors and motives behind its composition: Was Book Seven added on the Indian subcontinent or in the Ottoman Empire? One important aspect of the text being interpreted as Book Seven was a great anxiety over whether Rumi's Mathnawi had been incomplete, an assumption made by Rumi's own son Sulan Valad as well as by Sufis in India and the Ottoman lands. In addition to a literary examination of Book Seven of Rumis Mathnawi, the study also sheds light on religio-political conflicts between various social groups in Ottoman society in which this text played a major role. By examining Ismail Anqaravis (d.1631) introduction on his commentary, which presents a detailed account of his debate with Mevlevi and Khalveti Sufis and shaykhs, I argue that Anqaravi claimed authority as the ultimate commentator and Mathnawi-reciter among the Mevlevi Sufis, a claim that was bolstered by his closeness to Sultan Murad IV (d. 1049/1640). The book offers a new reading of Rumi from an Ottoman perspective through examining manuscripts, which have never been analyzed before. It explores the impact of Ottoman commentary practices on the development of Sufism and literature in the Ottom Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.
