From Fermat to Minkowski: Lectures on the Theory of Numbers & its Historical Dvelopment
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $This book arose from a course of lectures given by the first author during the winter term 1977/1978 at the University of Münster (West Germany). The course was primarily addressed to future high school teachers of mathematics; it was not meant as a systematic introduction to number theory but rather as a historically motivated invitation to the subject, designed to interest the audience in number-theoretical questions and developments. This is also the objective of this book, which is certainly not meant to replace any of the existing excellent texts in number theory. Our selection of topics and examples tries to show how, in the historical development, the investigation of obvious or natural questions has led to more and more comprehensive and profound theories, how again and again, surprising connections between seemingly unrelated problems were discovered, and how the introduction of new methods and concepts led to the solution of hitherto unassailable questions. All this means that we do not present the student with polished proofs (which in turn are the fruit of a long historical development); rather, we try to show how these theorems are the necessary consequences of natural questions. Two examples might illustrate our objectives.

The Mathematics of Minkowski Space-Time: With an Introduction to Commutative Hypercomplex Numbers
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.15 $This book arose out of original research on the extension of well-established applications of complex numbers related to Euclidean geometry and to the space-time symmetry of two-dimensional Special Relativity. The system of hyperbolic numbers is extensively studied, and a plain exposition of space-time geometry and trigonometry is given. Commutative hypercomplex systems with four unities are studied and attention is drawn to their interesting properties.

Geometry of Minkowski Space-Time
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 67.21 $This book provides an original introduction to the geometry of Minkowski spacetime. A hundred years after the spacetime formulation of special relativity, it is shown that the kinematical consequences of special relativity are merely a manifestation of spacetime geometry.

The Geometry of Minkowski Spacetime: An Introduction to the Mathematics of the Special Theory of Relativity
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.25 $This mathematically rigorous treatment examines Zeeman's characterization of the causal automorphisms of Minkowski spacetime and the Penrose theorem concerning the apparent shape of a relativistically moving sphere. Other topics include the construction of a geometric theory of the electromagnetic field; an in-depth introduction to the theory of spinors; and a classification of electromagnetic fields in both tensor and spinor form. Appendixes introduce a topology for Minkowski spacetime and discuss Dirac's famous "Scissors Problem." Appropriate for graduate-level courses, this text presumes only a knowledge of linear algebra and elementary point-set topology. 1992 edition. 43 figures.

Development of the Minkowski Geometry of Numbers Volume 1 (Phoenix Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.00 $A pioneering genius of pure and applied mathematics, Hermann Minkowski (1864 1909) founded the geometry of numbers and wrote extensively about his researches into the field. Until the distinguished American mathematician Harris Hancock interpreted Minkowski's writings, they were accessible only to a few specialists. Hancock elaborated on the master's writings, placing them in clear, readable form. This classic two-volume edition returns Hancock's brilliant exposition to the mathematics community after a long hiatus.Development of the Minkowski Geometry of Numbers concerns itself primarily with geometric problems involving integers and with algebraic problems approachable through geometrical insights. In addition to demonstrating that geometric proofs and theorems in number theory are often simpler and more elegant than arithmetic proofs, the author illuminates many other algebraic and geometric topics. Starting with preliminary background and historical remarks, Volume 1 examines surfaces that are nowhere concave; the volume of bodies; linear forms; the arithmetical theory of a pair of lines; algebraic numbers; and the theory of continuous fractions. Some of Minkowski’s shorter papers are discussed as well. Topics featured in the subsequent volume include approximations of algebraic numbers and of real quantity through rational numbers, the arithmetic of the ellipsoid, and extreme standard bodies.

Course in Arithmetic (Graduate Texts in Mathematics, Vol. 7) (Graduate Texts in Mathematics, 7)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.00 $This book is divided into two parts. The first one is purely algebraic. Its objective is the classification of quadratic forms over the field of rational numbers (Hasse-Minkowski theorem). It is achieved in Chapter IV. The first three chapters contain some preliminaries: quadratic reciprocity law, p-adic fields, Hilbert symbols. Chapter V applies the preceding results to integral quadratic forms of discriminant ± I. These forms occur in various questions: modular functions, differential topology, finite groups. The second part (Chapters VI and VII) uses "analytic" methods (holomor phic functions). Chapter VI gives the proof of the "theorem on arithmetic progressions" due to Dirichlet; this theorem is used at a critical point in the first part (Chapter Ill, no. 2.2). Chapter VII deals with modular forms, and in particular, with theta functions. Some of the quadratic forms of Chapter V reappear here. The two parts correspond to lectures given in 1962 and 1964 to second year students at the Ecole Normale Superieure. A redaction of these lectures in the form of duplicated notes, was made by J.-J. Sansuc (Chapters I-IV) and J.-P. Ramis and G. Ruget (Chapters VI-VII). They were very useful to me; I extend here my gratitude to their authors.

Horses, riders from the Acadmie questre de Versailles and Bartabas himself, whose successful productions are unique in the world of art, perform their elegant dressage arabesques within this exceptional setting.
