Life of Moravia [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $THE EXTRAORDINARY self-posession of Alberto Moravia can be traced to the many months he endured as a child and as a young man, confined to his bed, entirely alone, with nothing but books and his imagination to carry him through a long struggle against tuberculosis of the bone. He had no friends, no social life, no years at a university to connect him to the world. The result was a kind of unblinking gaze and acceptance of life which made him first one of the great novelists of the age, and finally one of the great memoirists. The Time of Indifference, his first novel (published this season by Steerforth), begun when he was only eighteen and published three years later, in 1929, changed the Italian literary landscape forever. That early fame never died and later novels - The Woman of Rome, The Conformist - only enhanced his reputation. Moravia put his life into his books but only now, with this unusual autobiography in the form of an interview with his friend, the writer Alain Elkann, is it possible to understand the literary use he made of the bourgeois world of his childhood in Rome, of his encounter with Fascism under Mussolini, of his months in hiding from the Germans in the mountains south of Rome, and of his marriages to two of the leading writers of his time - Elsa Morante and Dacia Maraini.

The Holocaust in Bohemia and Moravia: Czech Initiatives, German Policies, Jewish Responses (War and Genocide, 28) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 86.86 $Prior to Hitler’s occupation, nearly 120,000 Jews inhabited the areas that would become the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; by 1945, all but a handful had either escaped or been deported and murdered by the Nazis. This pioneering study gives a definitive account of the Holocaust as it was carried out in the region, detailing the German and Czech policies, including previously overlooked measures such as small-town ghettoization and forced labor, that shaped Jewish life. Drawing on extensive new evidence, Wolf Gruner demonstrates how the persecution of the Jews as well as their reactions and resistance efforts were the result of complex actions by German authorities in Prague and Berlin as well as the Czech government and local authorities.

Gold Family History : Eleven Generations from Moravia to Pennsylvania
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.55 $The Gold Family History: Eleven Generations from Moravia to Pennsylvania With the initial question of, “How did a large group of ethnic Germans come to live among the Slavic Czechs in Moravia?” The Gold Family history is traced back to the 1600’s and chronicles the Gold’s modest beginnings in Moravia, including the influence of the Thirty Years War as well as their time in shackles for their religious beliefs. It continues to the community of Herrnhut and across the ocean on the Ship Irene. Upon their arrival in the United States, the family resided in the Pennsylvania Moravian community of Bethlehem and were members of the “Great Wedding.” “When you get older, you start thinking about how it all began. I became curious about my ancestors who came from Czechoslavakia. So, possessing some academic and research ability, I began my quest. I found out early on that the records of the Czech Protestant Moravians (called the Unitas Fratum Brethren 400 years ago) were destroyed way back when by the Catholic Jesuits. But, I found a young Czech college student who researched the old Jesuit records. That was an exciting experience for me. The other amazing story in my quest was the trip that my wife and I made to Czechoslovakia and the area where my forebearers lived. The natives who live there now (all Czechs and not German Moravians) have started a museum based on the Moravian experience in their town. Another highlight of this book is my ancestors lives when they came to Pennsylvania during colonial time with the occupations of 19th century “grist millers.”

Hunters Between East And West: The Paleolithic Of Moravia (interdisciplinary Contributions To Archaeology)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 79.04 $At first glance, the archaeological record of Moravia has been quite visible in the Anglophone world. Bits and pieces of this record have repeatedly made headlines in both the general and the specialized press for close to a century. First, it was the discovery of a mass grave of some 21 individuals found at the Upper Paleolithic site of Pfedmosti, then the oldest evidence for ceramic technology reported in the first quarter of this century in the Illustrated London News. Later on, the site of Petfkovice, dating some 23,000 B. P. , produced evidence for the oldest burning of coal for fuel, while more recently the New York Times informed us that imprints in clay at Pavlov I attest to the oldest evidence for the making and use of textiles. This list of cultural innovations documented from Moravia can be expanded to include the use of ground stone technology to make stone pendants (e. g. , at Pfedmosti), oflarge ground-stone rings whose use remains enigmatic (e. g. , at Bmo II, Predmosti, and Pavlov I)-but which if found in more recent contexts would pass as querns-as well as of possible needles (again at Predmosti).
