This book is concerned with nonlinear semigroups of contractions in Banach spaces and their application to the existence theory for differential equa­ tions associated with nonlinear dissipative operators. The study of nonlinear semi groups resulted from the examination of nonlinear parabolic equations and from various nonlinear boundary value problems. The first work done by Y. Komura stimulated much further work and interest in this subject. Thus a series of studies was begun and then continued by T. Kato, M. G. Crandall, A. Pazy, H. Brezis and others, who made important con­ tributions to the development of the theory. The theory as developed below is a generalisation of the Hille-Yosida theory for one-parameter semigroups of linear operators and is a collection of diversified results unified more or less loosely by their methods of approach. This theory is also closely related to the theory of nonlinear monotone operators. Of course not all aspects of this theory could be covered in our expo­ sition, and many important contributions to the subject have been excluded for the sake of brevity. We have attempted to present the basic results to the reader and to orient him toward some of the applications. This book is intended to be self-contained. The reader is assumed to have only a basic knowledge of functional analysis, function theory and partial differential equations. Some of the necessary prerequisites for the reading of this 'book are summarized, with or without proof, in Chapter I.

Traditionally, missile autopilots have been designed using linear control approaches with gain scheduling. Moreover, three single axis autopilots are usually designed without considering the interaction among the motion axes. Such designs cannot handle the coupling among pitch-yaw-roll channels, especially under high angles of attack occurring in high maneuver zones. In most research studies, realistic factors like fin saturation, limitation of gimbal freedom etc are not considered. Our research work contributed a nonlinear multivariable approach to the design of an autopilot for a realistic missile that overcomes these difficulties. At first, exact input-output (IO) feedback linearization and decoupling is carried out for the dynamic IO characteristics of the inner rate loop of the pitch and yaw channels. This enables the design of scalar linear controllers for the inner rate loops. However performance deteriorates when the plant model is perturbed, due to aerodynamic uncertainties, from the nominal model. The robust IO linearization techniques are developed using H_inf and sliding mode techniques.

Prefaces are usually written when a manuscript is finished. Having finished this book I can clearly see many shortcomings in it. But if I began to eliminate them I would probably write quite a different book in another two years; indeed, this has already happened once. In 1979, when I finished the first version of this book, it was much broader in scope and was to be titled "Laser Photochemistry." Corrections and additions to that unpublished manuscript gave rise to the present book with its revised title and more specific subject matter. I resolved to have it published in exactly this form, despite the fact that it concerns a dynamically developing field of research and will soon make way for other works. This book contains the basic ideas and results I have been developing with my colleagues, friends and students at the Institute of Spectroscopy, USSR Academy of Sciences, in the town of Troitsk since 1970. It deals with the interaction of light with atoms and molecules via multiple-phonon inter­ action. Nonlinear processes in the resonant interaction are used to illustrate the physical mechanisms involved and to indicate how these processes have led to modern applications such as isotope separation, detection of single atoms and molecules, and chemical and biochemical synthesis.

The papers collected in this volume are contributions to T.I.Tech./K.E.S. Conference on Nonlinear and Convex Analysis in Economic Theory, which was held at Keio University, July 2-4, 1993. The conference was organized by Tokyo Institute of Technology (T. I. Tech.) and the Keio Economic Society (K. E. S.) , and supported by Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc .. A lot of economic problems can be formulated as constrained optimiza­ tions and equilibrations of their solutions. Nonlinear-convex analysis has been supplying economists with indispensable mathematical machineries for these problems arising in economic theory. Conversely, mathematicians working in this discipline of analysis have been stimulated by various mathematical difficulties raised by economic the­ ories. Although our special emphasis was laid upon "nonlinearity" and "con­ vexity" in relation with economic theories, we also incorporated stochastic aspects of financial economics in our project taking account of the remark­ able rapid growth of this discipline during the last decade.
