Onassis (Modern Plays)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.03 $Onassis portrays the last years of the life of the wealthy shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who after a notorious affair with Maria Callas, married Jacqueline Kennedy, widow of US President John F. Kennedy, in 1968.A millionaire at 25, he had become one of the world's richest men, but it was the glamour of the women in his life which brought him real fame, causing him to pursue personal vendettas and amassing empires on an international scale.Based in part on Peter Evans' book Nemesis, Onassis is an explosive account of one man's voracious appetite for sex, money and power. The play depicts Onassis' complex interwoven relationships with women and his family, as well as his long-running feud with the Kennedy family and the American establishment. With hints of Greek tragedy and hubris, it explores how those with great wealth and political influence live their lives detached from the moral code and realities of ordinary mortals.Onassis is a revised version of the play which, under its former title Aristo, opened to critical acclaim at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2008.

Aristotle Onassis
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 97.64 $Editorial Review - Kirkus Reviews He lived and he died, and nothing in this massive dossier compiled by a London Sunday Times team gives force or meaning to Onassis' life but an occasional quote: ""One of the most tragic things,"" a friend observed towards the end, ""was to see this most enchanting and fascinating of men become a bore."" The rebellious Smyrna child caught the popular imagination by his pranks; the buccaneering tanker-man led the flight from costly British or US regulation to the ""flags of convenience""; the solicitous host raised spoonfuls of caviar to the aging Churchill's lips. Intensity of attention to persons, intensity of application to business--and daring: these, one concludes from this and every other account, set Onassis apart and formed the basis of both his legend and his fortune. He had otherwise no accomplishments--no land-based investment as a monument, no innovation or masterstroke that was not a financial manipulation, temporal and transient. What Fraser and his fellow-researchers have done is to disprove some of Onassis' claims and disclose additional details that, in some cases, make provisional judgments final. Thus, it appears from an unreleased report that ""the aileron controls had indeed been reversed"" on the plane whose crash ted to son Alexander's death. It also appears that the long post-mortem owes more to the authors' possession of privileged information than to what it adds to an appreciation of Onassis' grief. This is wall-to-wall journalism, as if everything said and done were still important, with the result that the aborted Omega-project negotiations take on the dimensions of a Constitutional Convention. The telling is toneless, mirthless, and virtually emotionless. About Jackie, one hears the same Onassis-originated innuendos that surfaced just before and after his death; she and her intimates haven't talked. But there's lots here, for the reader to make of it what the authors haven't.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Paper Dolls (Dover President Paper Dolls)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.69 $Born into a socially prominent "Old Guard" family, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (1929–1994) was one of the most public and yet most private of persona. In 1953, this poised, soft-spoken, and intelligent young woman married John F. Kennedy, then senator from Massachusetts. Kennedy's election to the Presidency in 1960 would catapult this shy and sedate wife into the national and international spotlight, and she would go on to become one of the world's most admired and emulated women.Artist Tom Tierney pays tribute to this fascinating lady in a meticulously researched and excellently rendered paper doll collection. Five dolls, along with two figures representing her husbands, depict the former First Lady as a child, a debutante, a charming White house hostess, a young widow, and, in later life, the wife of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Accompanying the dolls are 27 costumes, among them a wedding dress of ivory white silk taffeta worn by the young bride in 1953, exquisitely tailored suits and dresses for day wear, a number of evening gowns for White House galas and receptions, a ski suit, and the beige chiffon wedding dress worn by Mrs. Kennedy when she married Onassis in 1968.
