De Los siete locos, que llevo al cine Leopoldo Torre Nilsson y que presentamos con un esclarecedor prologo de Mirta Arlt, ha escrito Juan Carlos Onetti: ...habia nacido para escribir sus desdichas infantiles, adolescentes, adultas. Lo hizo con rabia y con genio, cosas que le sobraban. Todo Buenos Aires, por lo menos, leyo este libro. Los intelectuales interrumpieron los dry martinis para encoger los hombros y rezongar piadosamente que Arlt no sabia escribir. No sabia, es cierto, y desdenaba el idioma de los mandarines; pero si dominaba la lengua y los problemas de millones de argentinos, incapaces de comentarlo en articulos literarios, capaces de comprenderlo y sentirlo como amigo que acude -hosco, silencioso o cinico- en la hora de la angustia. Hablo de arte y de un gran, extrano artista.

A modo de trilogia Novelas de Santa Maria reune tres de las obras mas importantes de Onetti que transcurren en esta ciudad mitica: La vida breve (1950) El astillero (1962) y Juntacadaveres (1964). Sin salir de esta ciudad a traves de sus personajes (Brausen Diaz Grey Petrus o Larsen...) descubriremos el universo que Onetti construye como refugio del hastio un mundo paralelo lleno de imaginacion como alternativa a la realidad de una mujer mutilada un astillero en ruinas o las desdichas sentimentales de sus personajes un mundo donde imaginar y fingir son las herramientas para construir el sentido de la vida. Un microcosmos que marcara toda la vida literaria de Onetti desde Un sueno realizado (1941) donde ya se prefigura la ciudad de Santa Maria hasta Dejemos hablar al viento (1979) novela en la que Onetti incendia la ciudad.
