Optimization Problems
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 117.78 $The German edition of this book, first published in 1966, has been quite popular; we did not, however, consider publishing an English edition because a number of excellent textbooks in this field already exist. In recent years, how ever, the wish was frequently expressed that, especially, the description of the relationships between optimization and other subfields of mathematics, which is not to be found in this form in other texts, might be made available to a wider readership; so it was with this in mind that, be latedly, a translation was undertaken after all. Since the appearance of the German edition, the field of optimization has continued to develop at an unabated rate. A completely current presentation would have required a total reworking of the book; unfortunately, this was not possible. For example, we had to ignore the extensive progress which has been made in the development of numerical methods which do not require convexity assumptions to find local maxima and minima of non-linear optimization problems. These methods are also applicable to boundary value, and other, problems. Many new results, both of a numerical and a theoretical na ture, which are especially relevant to applications, are to be found in the areas of optimal contol and integer optimiza tion.

Optimization in Operations Research
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 229.29 $Developing skills and intuitions through accessible optimization models and analysis. Rardin’s Optimization in Operations Research, Second Edition builds on the critically acclaimed first edition published nearly two decades ago and named Book of the Year in 1999 by the Institute of Industrial Engineers. The goal of the Second Edition is to make the tools of optimization modeling and analysis even more widely accessible to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, as well as to researchers and working practitioners who use it as a reference for self-study. The emphasis lies in developing skills and intuitions that students can apply in real settings or later coursework. LIke the first, the Second Edition covers the full scope of optimization (mathematical programming), spanning linear, integer, nonlinear, network, and dynamic programming models and algorithms, in both single and multiobjective contexts. New material adds large-scale, stochastic and complexity topics, while broadly deepening mathematical rigor without sacrificing the original’s intuitive style. This edition also continues the author’s belief that making optimization materials accessible and exciting to readers of diverse backgrounds requires a continuing discourse on optimization modeling. Every algorithm and analytic principle is developed in the context of a brief story, and computational exercises often begin with a formulation step.

Optimization of Behavioral, Biobehavioral, and Biomedical Interventions : The Multiphase Optimization Strategy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 166.62 $This book presents a framework for development, optimization, and evaluation of behavioral, biobehavioral, and biomedical interventions. Behavioral, biobehavioral, and biomedical interventions are programs with the objective of improving and maintaining human health and well-being, broadly defined, in individuals, families, schools, organizations, or communities. These interventions may be aimed at, for example, preventing or treating disease, promoting physical and mental health, preventing violence, or improving academic achievement. This volume introduces the multiphase optimization strategy (MOST), pioneered at The Methodology Center at the Pennsylvania State University, as an alternative to the classical approach of relying solely on the randomized controlled trial (RCT). MOST borrows heavily from perspectives taken and approaches used in engineering, and also integrates concepts from statistics and behavioral science, including the RCT. As described in detail in this book, MOST consists of three phases: preparation, in which the conceptual model underlying the intervention is articulated; optimization, in which experimentation is used to gather the information necessary to identify the optimized intervention; and evaluation, in which the optimized intervention is evaluated in a standard RCT. Through numerous examples, the book demonstrates that MOST can be used to develop interventions that are more effective, efficient, economical, and scalable.Optimization of Behavioral, Biobehavioral, and Biomedical Interventions: The Multiphase Optimization Strategy is the first book to present a comprehensive introduction to MOST. It will be an essential resource for behavioral, biobehavioral, and biomedical scientists; statisticians, biostatisticians, and analysts working in epidemiology and public health; and graduate-level courses in development and evaluation of interventions.

Optimization and Nonsmooth Analysis (Classics in Applied Mathematics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 101.01 $Mathematical Reviews said of this book that it was 'destined to become a classical reference.' This book has appeared in Russian translation and has been praised both for its lively exposition and its fundamental contributions. The author first develops a general theory of nonsmooth analysis and geometry which, together with a set of associated techniques, has had a profound effect on several branches of analysis and optimization. Clarke then applies these methods to obtain a powerful, unified approach to the analysis of problems in optimal control and mathematical programming. Examples are drawn from economics, engineering, mathematical physics, and various branches of analysis in this reprint volume.

Optimization Algorithms on Matrix Manifolds
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.98 $Many problems in the sciences and engineering can be rephrased as optimization problems on matrix search spaces endowed with a so-called manifold structure. This book shows how to exploit the special structure of such problems to develop efficient numerical algorithms. It places careful emphasis on both the numerical formulation of the algorithm and its differential geometric abstraction--illustrating how good algorithms draw equally from the insights of differential geometry, optimization, and numerical analysis. Two more theoretical chapters provide readers with the background in differential geometry necessary to algorithmic development. In the other chapters, several well-known optimization methods such as steepest descent and conjugate gradients are generalized to abstract manifolds. The book provides a generic development of each of these methods, building upon the material of the geometric chapters. It then guides readers through the calculations that turn these geometrically formulated methods into concrete numerical algorithms. The state-of-the-art algorithms given as examples are competitive with the best existing algorithms for a selection of eigenspace problems in numerical linear algebra. Optimization Algorithms on Matrix Manifolds offers techniques with broad applications in linear algebra, signal processing, data mining, computer vision, and statistical analysis. It can serve as a graduate-level textbook and will be of interest to applied mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists.

Optimization. Algorithms and consistent approximations.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.74 $This book deals with optimality conditions, algorithms, and discretization tech niques for nonlinear programming, semi-infinite optimization, and optimal con trol problems. The unifying thread in the presentation consists of an abstract theory, within which optimality conditions are expressed in the form of zeros of optimality junctions, algorithms are characterized by point-to-set iteration maps, and all the numerical approximations required in the solution of semi-infinite optimization and optimal control problems are treated within the context of con sistent approximations and algorithm implementation techniques. Traditionally, necessary optimality conditions for optimization problems are presented in Lagrange, F. John, or Karush-Kuhn-Tucker multiplier forms, with gradients used for smooth problems and subgradients for nonsmooth prob lems. We present these classical optimality conditions and show that they are satisfied at a point if and only if this point is a zero of an upper semicontinuous optimality junction. The use of optimality functions has several advantages. First, optimality functions can be used in an abstract study of optimization algo rithms. Second, many optimization algorithms can be shown to use search directions that are obtained in evaluating optimality functions, thus establishing a clear relationship between optimality conditions and algorithms. Third, estab lishing optimality conditions for highly complex problems, such as optimal con trol problems with control and trajectory constraints, is much easier in terms of optimality functions than in the classical manner. In addition, the relationship between optimality conditions for finite-dimensional problems and semi-infinite optimization and optimal control problems becomes transparent.
