When Owing a Shilling Costs a Dollar: The Saga of Lewis G. Clarke, Born a White Slave (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $Lewis G. Clarke, born into slavery, was separated from his Scottish father and quadroon mother at the age of six in Madison County, Kentucky. The atrocities he suffered and witnessed under his new masters were abominable and way beyond what most slaves endured during slavery. After escaping from bondage, Clarke then traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and became a primary spokesman for the abolitionist movement throughout the Northeast and Canada during the 1840s and 1850s. While in Cambridge, he lived in the home of Aaron and Mary Safford where he met many times with Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary's stepsister, as well as many other luminaries of the abolitionist movement. The rebellious quadroon slave George Harris of Mrs. Stowe's book Uncle Tom's Cabin was identified by her as based significantly upon the life of Clarke. When the Civil War ended, Clarke continued to be in demand as a speaker, nationally, on behalf of former slaves. Clarke's notoriety and influence was such that when he died in Lexington, Kentucky, that his passing was noted in newspapers throughout the world with full-page eulogies. If there was a common thread in Lewis's life, it related to striving to have the kind of family life that he never experienced as a child; however, during his lifetime, the vicissitudes of race and color lines in America made his vision not only challenging but ephemeral.

Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (architectural History Foundation Book) (american Monograph Series (architectural History Foundation))
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 177.97 $During the years when modernism triumphed in American architecture, few architects worked more actively to promulgate that vision than Gordon Bunshaft, and none was more adept at translating the ideal images of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier into buildable, corporate realities. Standards of design and practice established by Bunshaft in conjunction with his firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill came to be the measure by which much American work was judged, and the look of American cities changed accordingly. Carol Herselle Krinsky's analysis of Bunshaft's work is the first complete study of this important and at times difficult architect. Her analysis benefits not only from newly available source material but also from extensive interviews with Bunshaft himself. What emerges is an extraordinary portrait of one of the major architects of the twentieth century as seen through his buildings and the efforts to bring those buildings into being. The book also takes into account Bunshaft's clients who were often major figures in the worlds of business and politics. Krinsky discusses such icons of modern architecture as Lever House and the Manufacturers Hanover Trust, as well as such influential but less well known buildings as the Istanbul Hilton, the Hag Terminal and National Commercial Bank in Saudi Arabia, the Banque Lambert in Brussels, and the Pepsi Cola Company Headquarters in New York City. She relates Bunshaft's pioneering technological innovations to the buildings they enhanced and clarifies the collaborative workings of his phenomenally successful firm. Carol Herselle Krinsky is Professor of Fine Arts at New York University and a past president of the Society of Architectural Historians. She is the author of Synagogues of Europe: Architecture, History, Meaning and Rockefeller Center. This book is included in The Architectural History Foundation American Monograph Series.
