Papyri and the Social World of the New Testament
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.36 $In this book, Sabine R. Huebner explores the world of the protagonists of the New Testament and the early Christians using the rich papyrological evidence from Roman Egypt. This gives us unparalleled insights into the everyday lives of the non-elite population in an area quite similar to neighboring Judaea-Palestine. What were the daily concerns and difficulties experienced by a carpenter's family or by a shepherd looking after his flocks? How did the average man or woman experience a Roman census? What obstacles did women living in a patriarchal society face in private, in public, and in the early Church? Given the flight of Jesus' family into Egypt, how mobile were the lower classes, what was their understanding of geography, and what costs and dangers were associated with travel? This volume gives a better understanding of the structural, social, and cultural conditions under which figures from the New Testament lived.

The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Vol. 3: Edited With Translations and Notes
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.28 $Excerpt from The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Vol. 3: Edited With Translations and NotesIN accordance with the chronological arrangement adopted by us in the publication of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, the present volume is devoted to second century texts, with the exception of the theo logical and some of the classical papyri. The selection of documents here published in full or described probably represents less than half the second century material discovered in 1897, but it is our intention in future volumes to deal with successive centuries up to the sixth, and then to return to the older papyri temporarily passed over; In the spring of this year excavations at Oxyrhynchus were resumed, and another large find of papyri was made, including a certain number of the late Ptolemaic period. These, together with a selection of the more important literary texts from the new find, will be published in Part IV, which we hope to issue within a year.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Oxyrhynchus Papyri. LXXII (Graeco-Roman Memoirs)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 163.19 $Part I continues publication of the New Testament papyri from Oxyrhynchus, with fragments from two codices of Corinthians. Part II offers otherwise unknown hexameter poetry, much of it on traditional mythological subjects; the most substantial fragment, 4850, combines Homeric language and pathetic rhetoric in a way typical of Late Epic. Part III contains substantial fragments of two rhetoric handbooks. All but two of the thirty-five documentary texts in Part IV relate to giro transfers of private grain-stocks within and between state granaries. The papyri in Part V relate mostly to the fourth and fifth centuries and are chosen for their contribution to the chronology of consulates and post-consulates and include matters on civil and military bearing.

The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.82 $Excerpt from The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Vol. 5In editing the two most important classical texts, the Pindar (841) and the new historian (842) we have enjoyed for the last time the very great privilege of collaborating with Professor F. Blass, whose tragically sudden death occurred shortly after he had completed the revision of the earlier proofs of those two texts, to the reconstruction of which he had so largely contributed. It is impossible for us adequately to acknowledge the debt which our publications of classical texts during the last eleven years owe to the generous and unstinted assistance of that illustrious scholar, whose brilliance of imagination and depth of learning were never more admirably displayed than in the congenial occupation of restoring, elucidating, and identifying literary papyri. His loss is indeed to us irreparable, and will be felt most keenly when we come to deal with the immense number of fragments from the Greek lyric poets found during the last two seasons, since in that department no less than in that of the Attic orators his pre eminence was conspicuous.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
