The Paraphrase of Shem (NH VII, 1). Introduction, Translation and Commentary (Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies 72).
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.63 $This book presents the first comprehensive interpretation of the Paraphrase of Shem, Codex VII,1 in the Coptic Nag Hammadi Library. The lenghty introduction discusses the literary genre of the treatise, its plan and system, its situation among the Gnostic systems, its provenance and date. The translation sets out the text in paragraphs, with headings and subheadings. A short commentary follows the translation. The analysis of the system shows that the author is working from a model of the universe, whose principles have been drawn from Stoicism and Middle Platonism. While dipping into the springs of the major Sethian and Valentinian systems, the author follows his own way and offers an original system, anticipating in many respects Manichaeism.

A Paraphrase on the New Testament
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.37 $A Paraphrase on the New Testament first printed in 1685, Baxter's Paraphrase of the New Testament was the work of Richard Baxter, a Puritan who was known for his many writings on practical piety. Apparently, Baxter defamed the Church of England in this paraphrase and was imprisoned and severely punished as a result, but he was eventually released. The text contains doctrinal and practical notes throughout which are characteristically plain and brief but meant to help the reader in understanding the text. His paraphrase was also meant to aid families in daily reading and to help all people read and understand the New Testament. Interestingly, our copy contains a penned quote from the court trial of Baxter.

Paraphrases on the Epistles to the Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippans, Colossians, and Thessalonians
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 80.00 $As part of his effort to make the Bible an effective instrument of reform in society, church, and everyday life, Erasmus composed the Paraphrases. In these series of texts, the Holy Scripture provides the core of a work that is vastly expanded to embrace the reforming "philosophy of Christ" in all of its forms. This volume contains two sets of Paraphrases, one on the Corinthian letters (circa. 1519), and the other on the group of letters from the Ephesians to the Thessalonians (circa. 1520).The first set presents an epistolary narrative which not only enlivens the events described but revisits them from a sixteenth-century perspective. Together, they form a sharpened portrait of the primitive Corinthian church and an intriguing critique of the church as it was in Erasmus's time. The second set, Ephesians to Thessalonians, offers an interpretation of Pauline theology with humanistic overtones that are distinctively Erasmian. In these Paraphrases, we see the craft of the philologist at work in the articulation of the doctrine of the Trinity, the humanist depicting Christ with an unmistakably human sensibility, and the artist discussing familiar theological virtues of faith and love in a new way.Apart from providing the first complete English translations of these Paraphrases since 1549, this volume gives excellent insight into the fundamentals of Erasmian theology and includes annotations which highlight the historical and linguistic implications of Erasmus's original texts.Volume 43 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series.

Phrase and Paraphrase: Some Innovative Uses of Language
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 97.63 $The generative transformational approach to the study of language, under the leadership of Noam Chomsky, has already made significant contributions to cognitive psychology. In this volume, the authors examine the fundamental distinction linguists have made between competence (the speaker-listener's knowledge of his language) and performance (the actual speech and comprehension). Phrase and Paraphrase provides new insights into creativity as it relates to language structure. By analyzing the speaker's ability to invent and recognize constructional phrases, the authors show that various aspects of linguistic performance heretofore considered by many linguists "irrelevant performance deficits" are actually consequences of intrinsic linguistic organization.

The Soul in Paraphrase: Prayer and the Religious Affections
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.99 $The life of prayer is a double journey into the reality of God and the depths of our common humanity. These pages attempt to show how such formation in a particular pattern of religious affections is theological and not merely "subjective" or experiential. To say we love God but without love of neighbor, or to speak of God without gratitude or pain over injustice and suffering is not to have understood how prayer, experience and theology are related.

Collected Works of Erasmus: Paraphrase on Luke 1-10, Volume 47
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 120.03 $Erasmus yearned to make the New Testament an effective instrument of reform in society, church, and everyday life, and to this end he composed the Paraphrases, in which the words of Holy Scripture provide the core of a text that was vastly expanded to embrace the reforming “philosophy of Christ.” Paraphrase on Luke 1–10 contains the first half of Erasmus’s Paraphrase on Luke – the second half of which appeared in this series in 2003 – and completes the set of translations of the Paraphrases into English. In his Paraphrase on Luke, Erasmus expands on the original Gospel of Luke in the voice of its original author. The narrative is supplemented by Erasmus’ explications of the text’s moral, theological, and allegorical meanings and its psychological, historical, and geographical context. In addition to a fluid and idiomatic translation, Paraphrase on Luke 1–10 includes extensive annotations for the general or scholarly reader, making this a valuable and accessible resource for the study of both Erasmus and the New Testament.Volume 47 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series.

Biblical Epic and Rhetorical Paraphrase in Late Antiquity. Arca Classical and Medieval Texts, Papers and Monographs, No 16.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 47.97 $The turning of biblical texts into Latin poetry - biblical paraphrase - was a significant literary activity in late antiquity (third to sixth centuries AD). The most important surviving examples of this form are Juvencus and Sedulius (of the Gospels), Arator (of Acts), "Cyprianus Gallus" (Genesis to Judges), Claudius Marius Victorius (Genesis) and Avitus (parts of Genesis and Exodus). Generally described as biblical epics because they are written in hexameters and imitate pagan epic (especially Virgil), they have also been widely recognized to have drawn for their technique of composition on the rhetorical school exercise of paraphrase. Dr. Roberts analyses in convincing detail how the epic genre interacted with the biblical text through the medium of paraphrase to produce a distinctively Christian literature. He begins by offering the first modern study of paraphrase; two chapters describe its theory and practice, taking into account the standard rhetorical handbooks and recently discovered papyrological evidence. From this perspective, he analyses the types of alterations biblical epic writers made to the biblical text, thereby demonstrating the literary effects they were trying to achieve.
