Patristic Treasury: Early Church Wisdom for Today

Yet they constitute the "first story" of the Christian faith, built upon its apostolic foundation, which we ignore at our peril. Patristic scholar James Payton has made the Fathers easily accessible by selecting passages that are devotionally stimulating, doctrinally thought-provoking, or epigrammatically striking. Aristotle University is a brilliant example of this heritage in recent times. The present book is one of the latest manifestations of this example coming out of the first and the oldest Faculty of this University since its inception, the Faculty of Theology. Its author, a colleague in the area of Orthodox Patristic Theology, has shown repeatedly, the kind of scholarly research that is needed in the present post-modern era, where theology, philosophy and all sciences are trying to reconstruct their perspectives after the collapse of the 19th and 20th century modernism, which, in spite of its important and revolutionary advancements, created many crises in Church and Society because of its captivity to pluralism and its pursuit of an unbridled and excessive criticism. Christos Arabatzis, utilizing the modern progress in textual, historical and theological research in the area of Patristics, has raised the crucial and fundamental question relating to the criteria of interpretation and ministerpretation of Patristic Theology in Eastern Orthodox perspective. Patristic Universalism: An Alternative to the Traditional View of Divine Judgment
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.00 $From the earliest days of the church, there have always been three views on what happens to those who die without knowing Christ...damnation, annihilation, and restoration. Patristic Universalism presents scriptural, philosophical, and historical support for the restoration view and demonstrates why it was the model advocated by some of the earliest and greatest church fathers.Anyone disillusioned with the traditional view that one must get it right in this life or spend eternity in hell will find Patristic Universalism an appealing alternative that remains true to Scripture. One does not need to abandon the Bible as the inerrant and infallible word of God to discover that there might be more to the salvation equation than we've been led to believe.

God in Patristic Thought (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.32 $This book assembles the evidence for what the Greek Fathers, the men whose contructive thought underlies the creeds, really thought and taught about the nature of God. It shows that they were original thinkers, with a profound reverence for the text of the Scriptures, and minds keenly tranined to discuss what ultimate truths were expressed in the scriptural text and what reality should be ascribed to Christian religious experience. The results indicate that a good deal which is assumed in current theological text-books needs to be revised. The Fathers had to reconcile monotheism with faith in a Trinity of divine Persons. In the process, they pursued many lines of inquiry, often only to discard them after trial, but after following various clues and making various intellectual adventures they reached a solution of the problem, which was both true to their data and philosophically reasonable. Though the bulk of the book is concerned with the third and fourth centuries, during which the creeds were in the process of formulation, the story is carried down to the eighth century where the progress of original thought came to a standstill. It is shown that a great change came over the philosophical tradition during the sixth century, and owing to the consequent growth of formalism, a genuine outbreak of tritheism occurred. The book ends with the account of how this outbreak was met and overcome, largely through the efforts of a thinker whose very name is unknown, and whose book has only survived under the name of another man.
