The examination of rocks and minerals under the polarizing microscope is standard procedure in all modern laboratories. For the student and professional investigator there are numerous books and other published works that explain the theory of the polarizing microscope and other tools of petrographic research in adequate detail, and, in addition, there are several easily acquired reference materials which describe the classification and properties of minerals and rocks. However, a gap appears between these two classes of subject matter when an attempt is made to put theory into practice, and a search is made for a single publication that provides the data necessary for the correct identification and classification of minerals and rocks as examined under the microscope and by various other petrographic methods. This book is an attempt to bridge the existing gap in the literature and was written in response to a need that exists in the author's own courses in optical mineralogy and petrography and a need that has been pointed out by other workers in these fields. The book is designed for a semester course of the type that normally would follow a course in the theory and operation of the polarizing microscope. Emphasis has been placed on the use of thin sections for the examination of minerals and rocks. The author presents examples of coal deposits from two different continents: from the European Carboniferous and the Permian Gondwana sequence of Australia. The organic and petrographic composition of the coal content of palaeo-environmentally well defined groups of sediments allow the discrimination of two coal facies indices as suitable indicators for distinct settings. Combining the analytical methods of coal petrography, sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, an integrated view of coal formation is attained.

This college text is well written. For those who have access to both thin sectioning equipment and a petrographic scope with universal stage, most minerals can be identified. Solid solution minerals, notably the Ca-Na sequence of feldspars can be quantitatively determined. Without the universal stage, much of the thin section determinations can still be done using information in this text. The first 151 pages cover principles and microscope equipment. The next 272 pages cover the individual minerals and their unique properties and identification in thin section. The index is 16 pages.

This is a book for beginners. Not geological beginners, because an introductory course in paleontology and some knowledge of the petrographic microscope is assumed, but for beginners in the study of the petrography of fossil constituents in sedimentary rocks. Fossils are studied for various reasons: 1) to provide chron­ ologic (time) frameworks, 2) to delineate rock units and ancient environments, or 3) to understand the past development (evolu­ tion) of living plants and animals. All of these uses may be at­ tained through petrographic studies of thin sections of fossils embedded in sedimentary rocks. Some knowledge of the appear­ ance of fossils in thin section is also fundamental for general stratigraphic studies, biofacies analyses, and is even useful in studying some metamorphic rocks. Commonly, fossils are essen­ tial for the delineation of carbonate rock types (facies or bio­ facies). We have written this book for sedimentary petrologists and stratigraphers, who routinely encounter fossils as part of their studies but who are not specialists in paleontology, and for students who are seeking a brief review and an introduction to the literature of the petrography of fossiliferous sedimentary rocks. Although experienced paleontologists may be appalled by the many generalized statements on size, shape, and principal fossil characters recited herein, we counter that we have had some success in introducing non-paleontologically oriented geologists to the use and identification of fossil constituents without using excessive paleontological terminology and detailed systematics.
