Pieter Bruegel the Elder - Fall of the Rebel Angels
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.43 $Pieter Bruegel the Elder - Fall of the Rebel Angels is the first comprehensive book on one of the most cherished masterpieces of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels The book argues that with his Fall of the Rebel Angels (1562) Pieter Bruegel (died 1569) turned a traditional devotional theme into an innovative commentary on his own time, and situates the painting within the early modern cultures of knowledge and collecting Pieter Brugel the Elder - Fall of the Rebel Angels argues that many of the hybrid falling angels are carefully composed of naturalia and artificialia, as they were collected in art and curiosity cabinets of the time. Bruegel's much noted emulation of Jheronymus Bosch was thus only part of his wider interest in collecting, inspecting, and imitating the artistic and natural world around him. This prompts an examination of the world at the time that Bruegel painted the Fall of the Rebel Angels, locally, in the urban and courtly centres of Antwerp and Brussels on the eve of the Dutch revolt, and globally, as the discovery of the New World irreversibly transformed the European perception of art and nature. Painted as a tale of hubris and pride, Bruegel's masterpiece becomes a meditation on the potential and danger of man's pursuit of art, knowledge and politics, a universal theme that has lost nothing of its power today.

Pieter Bruegel : Parables of Order and Enterprise (cambridge Studies in Netherlandish Visual Culture)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 105.00 $This title investigates the artist's depictions of folkloric themes and the visual structures that the artist used to maximize effective communication between painter and viewer. Arguing that Bruegel's depictions of popular fables address issues of social transformation and conflict, Ethan Matt Kavaler demonstrates that they affirm the ideal of a stable, hierarchical society, an ethos opposed to a culture increasingly oriented toward business. The author draws a detailed picture of the evolving world in which Bruegel worked using a wide assortment of images and writings, including legal handbooks, popular theater, costume books, personal correspondence, emblem books, and alba amicorum. Also examined is the role of Antwerp as a center for the arts and home to an intellectual and commercial elite, who, ironically, were the owners of Bruegel's pictures of peasants.

Pieter Claesz: Master of Haarlem Still Life
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.62 $Pieter Claesz is one of the most important still-life painters of the Dutch seventeenth century. His work is noted for the realistic portrayal of the various elements of the still-life, almost to the point of being tangible. The sobriety preached at the time (from around 1630 onwards) is expressed in the monochrome pallet of his modest little banquets and breakfasts. His humble ingredients: bread, cheese, wine, a half-eaten herring, offered in pewter, glass, and porcelain tablewares, seldom varied. His still lifes were balanced, detailed, and tranquil. In 1620, Claesz took up residence in Haarlem where he founded a school of still-life painting. This book focuses on the period 1620-1645 in which Claesz developed the still-life to perfection. He was an artist that transformed the daily and the mundane into a momentous scene emanating a radiant beauty, using the simplest of means. Approximately fifty works are shown that well represent this important artist's evolution.

Pieter Bruegel: The Complete Works
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 145.21 $The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba’s brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content.Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He would eventually increasingly turn to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. This monograph is a testament to Bruegel’s evolution as an artist, one who bravely confronted the issues of his day all the while proposing new inventions and solutions. Rather than idealizing reality, he addressed the horrors of religious warfare and took a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, he developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions. To produce this XXL-sized collection, TASCHEN undertook a comprehensive photographic campaign, capturing all the breadth and splendid detail of Bruegel’s oeuvre like never before. The result gathers all 40 paintings, 65 drawings, and 89 engravings in pristine reproductions―each piece a unique witness to both the religious mores and the close-knit folk culture of Bruegel’s time.Marking the 450th anniversary of his death and his first ever monographic exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, this volume is the most immersive journey into Bruegel’s unique visual universe.

Pieter Saenredam, The Utrecht Work: Paintings and Drawings by the 17th-century Master of Perspective
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 146.85 $Pieter Saenredam (1597-1665) was one of the magical painters of 17th-century Holland, a time known as the Golden Age of Dutch Art. He spent his career immortalizing the churches of Holland in drawings and paintings. Working through a series of perspective drawings to the finished painting, he made innumerable fine adjustments to architectural details to create what may be justly called spaces of wondrous perfection of proportion and luminosity. Pieter Saenredam, The Utrecht Work is published to coincide with an exhibition of Saenredam's drawings and paintings, originally held at the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, and on view from April 16 through July 7, 2002 at the Getty Museum. This elegant volume brings together more than sixty drawings and paintings depicting the beautiful and historically venerable churches of the Dutch city of Utrecht.

Pieter Van Den Broecke's Journal of Voyages to Cape Verde, Guinea and Angola (1605-1612) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.79 $In the summer of 1630, Pieter van den Broecke returned to Amsterdam after completing his fifth voyage overseas as a commercial agent for various Dutch companies who were then expanding their worldwide trading networks. Van den Broecke used this homecoming to compose a lengthy manuscript describing his experiences, and to arrange its publication in 1634. However, this published version presented his account in a highly abridged and significantly altered form. The present edition offers for the first time an English translation of those parts of Van den Broecke’s original manuscript which describe the four trading voyages he made to Africa in the early seventeenth century. His manuscript is an important historical source because he was among the earliest of Europeans to describe in detail the communities he encountered in West Africa and Central Africa and to describe in detail the sophisticated commercial strategies of Dutch merchants then trading on the Atlantic coast of Africa. This edition begins with an introductory essay presenting Van den Broecke’s biography and places the writing of the manuscript within the context of his professional aspirations. The edited translation of Van den Broecke’s narrative is extensively annotated with reference both to other contemporary accounts and to relevant modern scholarship.
