Questo studio rappresenta il primo tentativo di analizzare in modo sistematico un insieme di materiali variegati e tuttavia intimamente coerenti: gli usi e il valore del termine phlyax le testimonianze e i frammenti di due poeti drammatici, Rintone e Sopatro (vissuti entrambi fra IV e III secolo, rispettivamente a Taranto e ad Alessandria), le cui opere sono definite come phlyakes dalle fonti antiche; le testimonianze e i frammenti di altri due poeti, Scira di Taranto e Bleso di Capri (entrambi di cronologica incerta), i cui drammi, non definiti come phlyakes dalle fonti, sono pero assimilabili a quelli di Rintone e di Sopatro. Il materiale in esame necessita di un'analisi a piu livelli. In primo luogo si impogono alcune problematiche di ordine storico. Tutti questi poeti, infatti, sono stati attivi in centri di primo piano nel mondo antico, la cui vita culturale conosciamo tuttavia in misura infinitamente piu limitata rispetto a quella di Atene: questo fatto solleva molte domande intorno al tipo di produzione drammatica diffusa al di fuori dell'Attica e al suo rapporto con quella ateniese. Inoltre, i frammenti dei poeti in esame hanno implicazioni notevoli di ordine letterario e filologico: il tratto distintivo che accomunava i drammi da cui provengono, infatti, era quello di interagire strettamente con i modelli tragici e comici attici, spesso in chiave parodica, ma non senza una capacita innovativa e un gusto raffinato, come emerge chiaramente a livello di scelte linguistiche e stilistiche. Il materiale qui raccolto e discusso testimonia quindi la prima fase, in eta ancora alto-ellenistica, di diffusione, ricezione e rielaborazione della produzione drammatica ateniese al di fuori dei confini dell'Attica, prima del suo recupero nel mondo romano.
