Les communications postales n'avaient jamais eu auparavant - et n'ont jamais eu depuis - une incidence plus immmédiate sur la vie des Canadiens, transformant le mode de vie rural jusque tard au XXe siècle.Appuyé sur une recherche approfondie, "Le courrier est arrivé !" est enrichi du point de vue perspicace de vingt-huit maîtres de poste de toutes les régions du Canada qui ont accordé des entrevues pour cet ouvrage. Le fonctionnement efficace du service postal rural est en grande partie le fruit de leur labeur.

Au cours des années 1950, de rares enfants eurent la joie de recevoir un courrier signé du Père Noël. Victime de son succès, cette initiative discrète de receveuses des Postes a dû être portée à la connaissance de la hiérarchie du ministère des PTT. Ce dernier a officiellement lancé en 1962 le « Service du courrier du Père Noël » avec la participation active de Françoise Dolto comme toute première secrétaire. Ainsi, depuis plus de cinquante ans, chaque lettre adressée au Père Noël est traitée par son secrétariat, qui rédige la carte réponse et la distribue avec la complicité des postiers avant la nuit de Noël. L’histoire de ce service révèle deux mouvements opposés : l’un issu du terrain, élan généreux tourné vers les rêves des enfants ; l’autre, porté par la hiérarchie, visant à diffuser la culture commerciale et marketing. Les frictions récurrentes entre ces deux logiques révèlent la transformation du rituel de la lettre au Père Noël, au cœur des tensions qui se nouent entre les pratiques de transmission familiale, les enjeux éducatifs promus par l’école et la montée en puissance de médias de masse ciblant les jeunes audiences. Mais, au-delà, la mission de ce secrétariat original exprime un engagement collectif pour le bonheur des enfants et incarne profondément l’identité même de l’administration postale.
